Hagerty article on the Miura

My all-time favorite car with the F40 being a close second and 288 GTO third.

King of the bulls, the Miura is the most collectible Lamborghini for good reason

Fortunate to have a buddy nearby with foresight and great taste. He spent 12 years slowly restoring this car.

You should suggest to your buddy that he put the air cleaners back on his car....

The Muira does not have a frame, the monocoque is just folded sheet metal.
Like most older cars these suffer badly from rust.
I settled for a Pantera (fit my budget) for a few years to get the vintage mid engine experience.

I'll bet he doesn't drive it other than across the parking lot.

They are awesome cars and should be driven. I used to see Leno out in his and another friend had this one, since traded for a better one.

Most beautiful lines on a street car to my eyes.

Unfortunately, will never be able to afford one.

Fortunately, will never own one. Never own/drive your heros they say... :-)

In early 2000's, I worked for a small indie Euro shop that was tied to an equally small but exotic used car dealership. The owner was insane, would steal from his own mother and then lie about it, and so the 'management' for sales and service was a constant revolving door cast of characters.

Looking back, it was with-out a doubt, the most corrupt place I've ever been associated with...……..and that's really saying something.

So in comes a new service manager; a 6' 8" 320Lb German guy who came from a shop in down south, he and his family lived in a camper trailer ( I s**t you not) behind the shop for two months upon arrival.

As bad as the owner was, the German guy was worse...…………...cheating / stealing.

So one day I roll in and notice an unusual but sexy car in the customer drop-off service area. so unusual that I didn't recognize what it was. Before going inside to change out and start my work day, I go over to it .............. guess what it was? Miura.

I say to the german what was the Lambo in for? I'd never heard of one, much less seen one in person. He said "It's in for trans issues, difficult to get into lower gears" like worn out syncros, sliders or whatever it had. He said" The customer already put a deposit on the work (!) and that's your job for today"

Me = "Hmmmmmmm" I go out, figure out how to get the rear deck up to take me a look-see only to find there is a whole V-12 sittin in there sideways like 10 gallons of crap in a 5 gallon bucket, further I can't even see how the trans / axle is put together.

I go back inside and say to the german, " You have service manuals, tools and a parts source?"

He started stuttering something about …."we'll do a tear-down, figure what's wrong and then order what we need"

Me = nope...…………………………..not doing that. You get me a service manual, show me where you're getting the parts from and then how many hours the job pays. ………...WE'll go from there. He says they only made a few hundred, can't find a manual...…

I refused to pull it in as I knew exactly what was going to happen. Until I read more about it here I did not know that early cars had an integral oil pan / gearbox. I don't remember what year that car was, but it didn't matter. I left there about a month later

Sounds like the old story about the guy w a Jag E-type who breaks down in the middle of Kansas and the shop it gets towed to says, “I dunno...we don’t get a lot of Corvettes in here.”

Whoops.

Imagine the cluelessness of a Muira owner who just leaves his car at a random shop for major surgery.

Well, I would have to remind you of what sort of person bought the early Lamborghinis. Let’s just say mechanical aptitude and common sense were not two of their qualities.

I have to say, the modern Lamborghini owner can be just as stupid. As can the modern Ferrari buyer, which is the main reason I sold the Ferraris. I don’t want people thinking I’m an idiot, imagine that.

Until I read more about it here I did not know that early cars had an integral oil pan / gearbox.
Early Morris Mini Minors shared that same design trait as a space saving move.
Just doesn't seem right - using a single lubricant for both engine & gearbox.
I'm sure someone here will have an informed opinion or two on this subject.

Cheers
JB

It’s not as big a deal as people make it out to be. Virtually every Japanese motorcycle made plus zillions more from European makers also have the transmission gears commingled with the engine oil. What’s worse, most of those run wet clutches bathed in the same oil, unlike the Miura which has a normal clutch. If I had a Miura, I’d just run a good motorcycle oil in it and be done with it.

The Miura does have a synchronized gearbox, while motorcycles typically have simple dogs, so there is that difference. Either way, you can introduce a little metal into the oil and I suppose if you’re a real idiot, you can do some damage to a synchromesh tooth.

But, the reality is none of these cars ever got driven all that much and most have under 50,000 miles on them, even today.

Probably won't. He literally gets flown around the Western Hemisphere to work on high-dollar, industrial engines.

So the car sat there in the same place until I left, the other 2 guys had no clue about repairing manual gearboxes, so they weren't doing it. I dont know how much $$$ - the owner prepaid - but I would love to know how long that went on until the owner picked it back up
