Maybe all government officials should be trained in 6S and lean principles . And then held accountable for waste reduction . Waste elimination was drilled into us at Lockheed Martin where my wife and I retired from . Three years removed from that environment and I still practice daily the principles we were taught .

There’s not much political will to do anything about it.
Not really something they’re that interested in fixing.

The whole system is mucked up. In Mass you have cops working 90 hour weeks (that’s almost 14 hours a day all year) and firefighters doing straight 40 hour shifts which includes sleeping. For a kid that needs services, there is zero money. Boston had a 60m OT budget for cops which just (or talked about) cut to 20m because of the defund chant. If your dishing out 60m a year, why wouldn’t you hire more cops? I took a tour of my new town fire station. You would think they were running NYC. The rec room was awesome. Big flat screen, several leather recliners and a top notch gym. Police detail at 50 an hour which is law for certain jobs. 1st it’s a 20-25 hr job, second they have a job, let someone else do it. Don’t get me started on our public transportation.
Hopefully this is a Massachusetts problem only. My point is that false Unemployment claims are only the tip of the iceberg. Even those who suppose to protect us are working the system.

But I’ll be callous and say that if the government would just stop throwing around our money like a drunken sailor at a strip club, it would solve a lot of these problems. There are a LOT of people currently receiving government assistance that are more than capable of finding a job.

Right there with you on that one.

I'm one of those who believes the more unemployment money is available the more people will somehow be unable to find a job. Take it away altogether and i think we'd be amazed at how many folks manage to get work.

And we can lump disability into that philosophy as well.

It’s more than just disinterest since it’s politically advantageous to keep the status quo.

There was a piece on the local news here a few days ago about a local employer who had several job openings saying they couldn't attract any candidates and the few that inquired were saying it was easier to stay home and collect Unemployment Ins.

Welcome to my world. Not exactly, but I do a lot of worker's comp. My boss tells me I'm cynical, but I'd guess that a quarter of my patients are full of it. They're just there to game the system.

berettafan 03-02-2021 10:51 AM

Noah i'd bet it's a much higher percentage than that!

Same drill here. Several weeks ago I get a prepaid debit card from the Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES) asking me to confirm benefits. I have 26 years with the company, live and am employed in Michigan, and am not sure how they got my SSN. When I called the IDES to report the fraud, they verified the person used my actual SSN and recommended I file with FTC.gov site which led me to place credit freezes on all reporting bureaus and notify banks and work. I’m hopeful this is the end of my identity theft for now.

In my research as to how this scam works:
When a person applies for unemployment, they are sent a KeyBank debit card in an inactivated state. It is up to the recipient to call KeyBank and have the card activated and set up a PIN number. It’s only then that the card would be ready to use, Salustro said.
At the same time, IDES always asks people to sign up for direct deposit of benefits because it is faster and more secure, he said. What scammers do is apply for benefits using a person’s stolen identify and then quickly convert the benefits into a direct deposit of an account that they control

State of Illinois estimates over 1M fraudulent UE claims. https://abc7chicago.com/ides-unemployment-in-illinois-fraud-report/10367159/

In my teens and early 20s I did maintenance and repairs for a mobile home park. I’d say 75% of the people there were taking advantage of some variety of welfare despite being physically able to work. Many of them worked on the side for unreported cash. So I may be ever so slightly jaded on this topic.;)

I have many tenants doing exactly that.
They aren’t shy about it either.
They’re not going to even think about looking for a job, or going back to their old job, until the Federal unemployment supplement ends.

Exactly.
No one loses votes by throwing money around.

A big issue is there are actually people on disability and unemployment that really need it, and ones that clearly don't...its just the latter have mastered looking like the former.

I would agree, and in my experience there is very little effort put forth to verify.

I can only expect this to continue, possibly get worse.

The recovery affects from covid are bad, I know, I go through it daily. Having that said, I still work. When the dizzy comes on, it just does you in. Sometimes with nausea. You can do nothing but sit back and relax until it's gone. I'm waiting it out right now, but better than I was 1/2 hour ago.

I know I have to work today, and will. Wait until "they" know. More unemployment to come...
