Air Fryers and such
Hey peeps,
The wifey picked up a new fangled kitchen appliance. Offed three old and busted for one kinda a thing. Anyway, I know some of you have these and as they say, “Stand on the shoulders of giants to reach the stars”..... ok, to be honest, I have no idea who would have said that so I just made some shat up. Anyway, just looking for some first hand pointers, do’s and don’ts, things that work or not, even any off the wall type stuff or just some bad a$$ recipes any of you are willing to post. I am attempting to prevent this thing from become just “another” piece of counter art. Have heard some positives in these things but we have zero experience. ![]() PS: I inadvertently posted this in the tech forum. I deleted the text but the title remains. Will need to access on a computer in hopes to fix. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Those sound like a healthier/faster alternative to deep frying.
Does it also work like a countertop convection oven (cook a pizza slice)? |

Retired, finally

Had one for a couple of years, and love it. Best chicken wings and french fries ever.

I use mine for wings and I’ll cube up a pork butt and fry those up with just some salt and pepper.
Makes for a good snack.

So how are these any different than a convection toaster oven?

I have one and love it. Makes an unbelievably good hamburger, no joke.
Also, tater tots are crispy in 13 minutes from frozen. |

Now in 993 land ...

From what I have been served nothing that an oven can't do. There is no "air frying", it is a fad and most people I know who bought one have it sit in their shed or garage by now. You put oil on it and bake it in hot air ... that reduces the fat content vs. frying in a bath of oil.
IMHO if you want to improve your nutrition, just bake things in the oven. G |

I love my air fryer and lust after that XL fryer you got! I roast a whole chicken in about an hour in my 6qt. Fries, pigs in a croissant, cinnamon rolls...

Agreed, hamburgers (and steaks!) are really good. Crispy outside, juicy inside. Made bacon-wrapped stuffed jalapenos a few weeks ago - those were awesome.

Pretty much exactly that. The “fryer” is a misnomer. Uses super heated circulating air that cooks fast and efficient without any oil. It claims it can cook a mini pizza and even crisp one up, although we haven’t gotten that far. We look forward to experimenting with different types of foods. ![]() It allows for temp, time and type of food your preparing. According to the panel on this one, there is a symbol for cake ![]() I popped over to a coworkers one evening and they were prepping Brussel sprouts. Cut in half then cooked for 5-6 minutes, pulled them out and they were crispy brown on the edges. Drizzle caramelized balsamic vinegar, and bam! A tasty snack. I guess that is when I asked the wifey about them and that’s when she said she has been looking. The one we ended up with is one that came recommended from one of the clerks she works with who uses her’s nearly every day. Bed Bath and Beyond had them but then Sam’s club had them and they were on sale. $129.00 win win. We have been able to get rid of an old electric counter toaster oven, another grill of some sort and an additional cooking device. Cheers Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Can’t wait to try. At first I could wrap my head around the “how can it cook up fries without deep frying?!?” But it says it can as well as others who have done it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

the principle is the same. Just uses super heated air to do it in less time and more efficient.

Yes, very true. Nothing beats whole food. From the literature I e read so far, the “air fryer” is an alternative to heating a large oven and uses super heated air to cook and lock in moisture. I agree, that if you don’t use it then yes, it becomes counter art. This has allowed us to get rid of three items and “should” allow us to using the microwave less and less. Now that’s an item that kills nutrition in foods. Cheers Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

That’s good to hear. We were able to get it at Sam’s while there was a promotion going on. Can’t wait to really start using it. Beer batter, bread crumb rolled halibut chunks are sounding purdy tasty.... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

If anyone wants to give them a go, here is what I found. I’m sure there is a variance depending on where you get it.

be careful of where the exhaust outlet is located in reference to say...the plastic kureg machine. our kureg is still usable but could have been melted to an unusable lump. at least I noticed it early.
our fryer is now shelf art. it doesn't even rate the counter anymore.

We won a Tefal air fryer at BINGO. I only used it for French fries. It was too small to cook food for lite than two. It ended up sitting around taking up space. I couldn’t see any advantages over a regular oven etc. So we sold it.

I'd like to try one. l'll keep an eye out at the thrift stores. A lot of these countertop gadgets end up there.
