Post Counts

Have we had this conversation before? Over the years, I have offered an embarrassing number of forum posts on this website. More than 20K. Let's assume each post takes thirty seconds.

20K * 30 seconds is 600,000 seconds.

600K seconds is 10,000 minutes.

10K minutes is 166.67 hours.

Now, I am a loudmouth but even so, I spend considerably more time reading than writing so let's say 166.67 represents only 1/4 of my time here.

166.67 * 4 = 666.67 hours

Work weeks are forty hours. For the lucky or the lazy, at least. And so....

666.67 / 40 = 16.67 weeks

Four full time months. That's nuthin. There are folks with more than 60K posts. This would be closer to a full time year. And this dovetails with my anecdotal observation that some folks seem to be actively participating in conversations on this site nearly all the time. Some are so reliably present here that I think the "full time year" estimation may grossly understate the actual amount of time spent. I'm not calling anyone out here, and not making judgments. Who am I to point a finger with 22K posts?

This is addictive behavior. Pelican. Various forums. The Internet.

Hm.

Your analysis ignores my ability to multi-task. I post on the forum at the same time I am making critically important decisions. See, two birds with one stone.

You're fired!

Oops, that was something else I was working on.

GH85Carrera 03-12-2021 11:07 AM

My post count is stupid high. Most of that is in the old random pictures thread, and the new random pictures thread. That and the Stijn thread. Remove those two sources, and I am at a very average post count.

Lot of photo posts can take just seconds to upload the photo and move on.
I have
Over 18K is the old random pics.
Over 19,000 in the Stijn thread.

red-beard 03-12-2021 11:14 AM

Or the ability to post very quickly.

URY914 03-12-2021 11:36 AM

I have over 100k on the 914 forum. :p

dafischer 03-12-2021 11:43 AM

We need equality in post counts!

varmint 03-12-2021 02:26 PM

Yes, I mutlitask by posting at work and while driving and pretending to listen to family.

Bill Douglas 03-12-2021 02:46 PM

Not just a champion at posting, but you beat me by a couple of months when signing up.

Bingo. Plus, I'm retired and 77 years old...a little late to hang out at the high school and chase cheerleaders. What else to do but mess about on the net?

My favorite pool hall still closed thanks to the orders of Kommisar Kate Brown of Oregon.

How did you go about calculating that?

Second question (for everyone), when does post count go from a source of pride to a source of shame?

Left click on "Replies" when on the thread index. Window opens and lists who's posted the most in a thread.

I pretty much own the transportation thread.

Arizona_928 03-12-2021 04:51 PM

Now calculate how many hours you have worked for another human and report back

Calculate how much time is spent in the john if you go 10 minutes each day for a poop on company time. That's another week of paid vacation in a year!

Zeke 03-13-2021 07:55 AM

I come here if I'm eating alone and when I've just finished reading the online newspaper and run through my emails. Then some, which IS a drain on time.

For the most part, it's entertaining and offers some alternative perspectives. Random highlights of current events that would be otherwise overlooked is another reason.

But none of that requires a reply. Once in awhile a post asking a question reaps a lot of information. A lot of it good and some pretty arcane. I have only one on my ignore list as this person is never germane, just off the tracks about 90% of the time.

Reading people like that IS a colossal waste of time and thoughts created during that time are usually counterproductive. You got to know when to hold them and when to fold 'em.

That alone saves a huge amount of time.

My breakdown would be that in the first 2/3rds of my time here I never came to OT. Participating in the tech threads becomes very repetitious after a few years. I can't even imagine how many times Grady Clay and Early_S_Man went over the same information. They were very generous.

We owe a lot to a few.

Thanks for putting it into words for me. I probably spend too much time here. I too only have one person on ignore but ready to add a couple more if they don't get banned.

Look at my join date and post count...

Thanks, that works for individual threads, never knew how to do that.

How does one figure out specific sections of the forum post count: OT, PARF, Technical 911, so on and so forth?

Not gonna happen at your level. Admins can do that, I think. There are some queries in the software that we don't see. I saw some of it as a mod.
For instance, if you delete a post only the members can't see it. It shows up in your string as (deleted) but it's intact. So are your edits visible to mods and admins.

You can run but you can't hide.

mattdavis11 03-13-2021 11:09 AM

The only thing I had to offer, was deleted (moderated) on page 2 or 3 of the more random pics thread. Now with the change, all I have are the memories.

I have been here about as long as you have and my post count is embarrassingly low. I have enjoyed your posted over the years and remember you from "the beginning" LOL. Keep it up!

Jeff Hail 03-13-2021 12:06 PM

This thread reminds me of when the strippers got busted and went to court only to provide an exemplar to the judge of what really transpired. Proving a point you really could not see anything indecent except for well- undergarments.

Being politically correct in this world now we cant go around calling people post whores any longer because they post a lot. Someone may get offended and we just can't have criers. Its like inviting Typhoid Mary to a mixer.

But we can refer to them as CFC's "content filler contributors". Kind of like the cereal dust at the bottom of the box that few actually eat.

Then again many people actually do contribute some really good stuff here which we enjoy and find both value and entertainment in.

red-beard 03-13-2021 12:11 PM

I've been here 20 years. That is about 2000 posts per year which averages to about 5-6 per day.

Hmmmmmmmm.....

A tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing

when we post 90% in parf.

Bill Douglas 03-13-2021 01:41 PM

I'm here every day adding to my post count. Because, well..., I've been doing so badly on the markets that it's my only form of income.
