2001 Ducati ST2 - What to look for?

I know there are a few Ducati guy here. This bike just came up near me and I've been 'needing' a sport touring bike since my VFR was replaced by the Harley.

My question here is are there specific things I should be looking at?

I am comfortable with the used motorcycle run down, but are there things specific to this gen Duc I should be concerned about?

2001 Ducati ST2
Blue bodywork/silver frame/wheels
32K
Remus Exhaust
have sidebags to go with

Thoughts?

Others will have more info, age of timing belts if in doubt change them. Some of the older ss had problems with rust in gas tank. Nice looking bike, I need to consider one of those.

Just got back into Ducs with an st3s. People complain about the headlight on the 2's being wimpy. Regulator/wiring issues are pretty common on the older 2's as well. Fuel pumps can be problematic, but there is a generic bosch part. Belts every 24 mths according to Duc, but folks go longer. Not hard to diy. Valve adjustments are a regular thing, and they're a bit of a pain, shims and closers.
Upgrade the stock saddle to the later (o4 and after) as its gel and more comfy.

If you can tour with those handlebars then you can handle anything that the Duc may throw at you.

They look similar to my 900SS/SP bars and are fun for a while, not touring while though...

Thanks for the input so far!

At this stage of life, touring will be limited to day trips in the mountains.
My past 'touring' bikes have been Honda Interceptors (1984 VF700F, 2002 VFR800)
It'll be interesting to see how this riding position compares.

Bars too low? Not a GL1500 but they don't look that bad to me, about the same as my old ZX11, fine for about 5 hrs of riding anyways. It is a sport touring.

Helibars, SpeedyMoto, Cyclecat and others make st2 riser bars. They make a huge difference.

I'm third in line to look at the Duc. Guessing it'll be gone by the time I can even see it.

71T Targa, I would not worry too much, there are many of the ST series around, ST2, ST3, ST4, ST3S, ST4S and also the 900ss and M900 of those years. The hard part is narrowing down what you want, at least for me it is. I'm still trying to figure out what it would take to make a 999s into a sport touring bike.

as mentioned above anything you would look for in a similar year 900ss, minus the carb problems. Anything affected by time and heat and Italy.

Its all about the stack of receipts that goes with the bike. If the owner has been on top of things, I would not be put off by the higher mileage. But if it's a mystery, I would put $1500 on top of the asking price, and ask yourself if its worth it.

EDIT. If the photo is the one supplied by the owner, his garage in the background looks pretty tidy. I look for that kind of thing. And the bike itself looks very clean.

This... . I bought my 06 even though I wasn't really looking because the stack of receipts within the last 1 k miles equaled the price of the bike. Valve adj, belts, tires, coolant hoses, ecu flash, etc. The tach doesn't work, which is a 1k fix even if you diy (due to the stupid immobilizer on later bikes) so it was priced at 3k.

Funny. I always judge a bike by the owner. As soon as I pull up to the guy's house I judge the upkeep on the house, cars, garage and finally the nick of the bike. If the guy's life looks like a disaster why would the bike be any different?

The ST in good shape is great bike to tour on. A friend I ride with has had several and always raves about em. He had an ST with Ferracci pipes on it. Sounded fantastic.
