Incredible how the hulls are lifted out of the water. Is there a rule preventing skeletonizing the hull? Seems that they don't need the full hull.

These foiled monohulls are capable of sailing at 4X wind speed, and will do nearly 60 MPH in the right conditions! Must be quite a sensation when the hull comes up on the foil and the boat suddenly picks up speed. Must be something like a turbo kicking in. Gotta be tricky to sail them properly though...
Would love to catch a ride on one ![]()

I happened to catch a SailGP race in San Francisco in 2019. The speed of the boats is even more impressive in person than on TV, and it sounds like these Americas cup boats are quite a bit faster.
Edit: Nevermind, sounds like the SailGP F50 catamaran is faster than the AC75 monohull.

I had someone say that the winner writes the rule book?
I've never looked it up to verify. |

They don't write the rule book so to speak. It's called "the rule of gift" which means they get to set the parameters for the next challenge, where, when, specs of the boat.

My wife and I were in Bermuda in 2017 for the Louis Vuitton Cup ( the challenger trials). In 2017 they sail the AC62's, the old cup boats the AC72's (I think) in Redbull livery were available for rides, which can be seen in pic one that I have posted.

You can get rides in the older boats in Auckland too.

That's awesome Doc! Do you remember how much the tickets were? Was it "expensive but justifiable" for a one-time experience? We were all booked up to go Cagliari last spring to watch the AC World Series. I didn't work on the boat myself but I had sweet talked my colleagues into at least letting us into the paddock. Obviously that plan didn't pan out...
I thought the racing on day 2 was more exciting than yesterday. It looked like the the boat that was behind could very quickly catch up and overtake at any moment, if they got a bit lucky with enough wind to foil. A bit like watching old timey boats when neither are foiling, which was painful and entertaining to watch at the same time. I'm guessing real displacement boats would be much more efficient under the same conditions. Never been on foils before and would love to experience it. Anything not self-propelled would be fine - big cats, small cats, surfboard, etc. |

Well the latest is America Magic is sinking.
Yes, they messed up a down wind jibe and capsized. Everyone was OK and it looked all in order. Right the boat etc, lets not do that again (powered it up too soon coming out of the turn and got hit by a gust of wind), then it started sinking. Various teams support boats joined in and they have floatation devices under it to keep it up. It also suggests there is some damage to the boat to be letting in water like that. Good luck guys. |

The old 12 meter AC boats were definitely lead bottomed money grubbers, yet:
Dennis Connor losing the cup to the Australian boat with the wing keel in Freemantle in 1983 then winning in back in 1987 in San Diego was quite a bit deal news wise.. and let's not forget Ted (Captain America) Turner. Like all sports, it is all about the money. it seems the Americas cup is not longer really country against country as is is just hired guns to a great extent. My opinion anyway.. And I certainly don't blame the "hired guns" for taking the money !!

Why not go back even further. I'd love to see a classic wooden 12 meter under full sail...
