We got some pretty handy Tugboat captains down here. We're about halfway through whacking up the Golden Ray. Pretty big chunks to haul away.

If that ship lost steerage, I'd be paying attention to the middle east and far east...

Is that a typo?

Maybe at 131 mph that would be a reason, I'm not buying 31 mph.

I don't know, Think about the square yardage area of the side of that thing combined with the (lack of)width of the canal. Throw in the fact the thing is steered with a rudder at the stern
It seems to me a sudden sustained gust could really screw up your day.

Best

It’s got 50 feet of draft, that ship doesn’t blow off course in a stiff breeze.

Early on, there were reports of a loss of steerage. Whether that remains true and what caused it are the two questions of the day.

PLEASE stay away from anything that looks like engineering. OldE Les has it right.

Water does not support shear. If that ship has no side thrusters on the nose a stiff breeze absolutely will push it around.

Well, fortunately for all of us, it has two bow thrusters. 3400 hp, per each.

And, even more luckily, that thing is essentially the biggest container ship on the water.

A rudder becomes less and less effective as forward speeds slow...seems a good sustained side wind and slow speeds could easily and quickly push the stern way sideways and any forward momentum translates to a problematic canal beaching event.

“ Shipping agent GAC reports that the grounding occurred at 7:40 a.m. local time on Tuesday (March 23) at kilometer 151 after the vessel suffered a black out while transiting.

It seems the Ever Given had just begun its transit of the waterway as part of a northbound convoy when the incident occurred.”

Yep. That one ship holds 20,000 containers. Worse yet, they built a bunch more just like it.

Wouldn’t it be nice if we made it all over here and didn’t have to ship it from that ****hole overseas, China?

Think of all the pollution we would save.
