Porsche 911 rally car with the most competition miles...

... goes to Goodwood auction! Bonhams stated that the 1976 Porsche 911 rally car has, "more competitive kilometers than any other Porsche." Don't believe it? Sources say that the auction house has documentation to prove it. Read all about its competition history here. It is set to go for auction on September 14th, with all of the full documentation of its race history. The pre-sale estimate is £400,000-£500,000 ($490,000-$620,000 U.S.). What do you think it'll go for?

How is a 3.2 "period correct" for a middie?

Air cooled 4 cylinder period, air cooled 6 cylinder period, anti freeze period, now entering the electric period.

They didn't fix the front valence that is ready to fall off in an attempt to keep it "as raced" original,
but it has a non-original engine in it. That'll hurt the price IMO.
The race history mentions lots of races it entered, but only mentions one class win:
Quote:
Two years later, the 28-year-old coupe returned to the scene of its first crime, running the London-Sydney Marathon in 2004 and winning its class.
Bidders like winners, cars that won lots of races or historic races.

My guess is the bidding tops at $325k.

Plus the steering wheel is on the wrong side ....

From OP's link:

The globetrotting, high-rise 911 with a 3.0-liter flat-six was delivered to Polish rally driver Sobislav Zasada, and he and co-driver Wojciecj Schramm entered it in the 1977 London-Sydney Marathon. That single event put more than 18,500 racing miles on the chassis, with Zasada and Schramm leading all the way into Australia before bogging down in deep sand Down Under.

Sobislav Zasada has a Wiki page and was a successful driver with several rally championships and a successful auto/utility vehicle related business career. Says he owned factories.

Probably, but that doesn't bother me at all.
What makes this a poseur to my eye is the unprotected oil lines.
But I like the effort.
Wish I had the wherewithal to do a thing like this and take it on the Gambler, or out to Moab.

The red 911S had kangaroo protection like this for the London to Sydney Rally across Australia.

Local legend was that, for the main rally event, Zasada never even saw a kangaroo.
For later rallys in Australia the piano wire was taken off - and that's when they hit a monster roo!!!

Was there live as a kid watching these cars. The actual Waldegaard and Thorszelies cars In the works garage seeing them getting prepped. Dad helped with logistics. And the fine crew brought a new case in their luggage for the 356 S90 restoration my dad was completing there at the time. We followed the Safari in person.

The car in the original post is not an original safari car. Sure, maybe it had rally history, but it is none up in the safari livery as that is the current rage.... I hope it sells for big bucks, but is is beat to $hit with plenty of "mods"....

Cheers

To be fair, the rally cars of the days.. they weren't even correct then.
Cars got wrecked in a crash.. then 2 weeks later showed up with same vin at the start of the next rally.. ALL the time..
All the oem's did it.. If you competed in pro rallying, you did vin transplants at the factory.
off course it wasn't legal, but everybody did it, and everybody knew it.
It was just easier AND Safer to pull a chassis of the main line and transplant (cut out from old and restamp the same vin on the new chassis) then anybody could repair those pile ups

And if they didn't crash an rise like a phoenix, they got hacked and modded and ripped and replaced continously... so good luck deciding what is correct or not on such cars.
