I don't want to derail, but I was curious when reading the thread about the Ever Given, do you have any thoughts about the deal in the Suez, or does your expertise not really apply in that instance?

Back on topic. Road Hockey? Hockey played in the road or on a hard surface? Hockey is interesting. I had a college roommate from up north that could skate and play hockey. I can rollerblade, but not well enough to play hockey. It's impressive, the gracefulness of movement that's capable with skates, and then the roughness of play that you often see/hear about in hockey.

Back on topic. Road Hockey? Hockey played in the road or on a hard surface? Hockey is interesting. I had a college roommate from up north that could skate and play hockey. I can rollerblade, but not well enough to play hockey. It's impressive, the gracefulness of movement that's capable with skates, and then the roughness of play that you often see/hear about in hockey.

YP is being classy, we called it street hockey. We didn't have ice arenas where I grew up. Watch an NHL match in slo-mo and you'll see a real ballet.

I followed the Ever Given predicament but really had no comment because that ship was so BIG and we never had them like that. No containers vessels at all. I did think the loader or backhoe was a very amateurish attempt and a bit embarrassing, and I knew they needed the biggest tug in the world (one only) and I believe we had that tug in our waters and one time.

I think the Ever Given was a very deep draught, like 50 or 60 feet, and that it would be a big job, not for guys like us. However, if they had wanted us , we would have gone if just to kick the tires a bit.

BTW The canal is narrower than I thought.

BTW road hockey played in sneakers on paved roads. If you didn't come home with a bloody nose, you were a slacker.

Love/hate relationship with Good Friday. I did get to miss a half day of school, the middle half, always had to go back. The stations of the cross, oh boy. Some years I was the crucifer, man that was tough. Then there was the fasting. I would get sick from not eating all day.

I love it now that I don't participate to the extent I once did.

Our street hockey was played on roller skates with golf clubs and golf balls.

Try not eating since sundown before, then having 2 and a half glasses of cheap wine (Tuesday is usually a good vintage for Mogen David) before getting anything more substantial than a couple of bites of oversize unsalted cracker.

I refuse to discuss the gefilte fish....

Ball hockey.
Tennis ball on the road or at the school compound. Great fun and someone always gets hurt!

I remember running hard with the ball and the tip of my hockey stick stuck in a crack in the pavement. The butt end got me right in the guts and lifted me right off of my feet bent over the stick. Took me 10 minutes to get up winded, bruised with a profuse nosebleed from the pressure...

As a recovering catholic, (44 years clean now!) one of the rules around lent was having to "give up something"

I would invariable give up eating gefilte.

We all sacrifice in our own ways.

We always gave up eating fresh lobster, only Nova Scotia had lobster at that time(Lent)
and there was zero chance of anyone of us getting lobster anyway. I have sinned, no doubt.

Besides I'm only trying to get to heaven because John Prine is there.

We always sacrifice any sort of desserts for the Lenten 40 days. I’m down an honest 4lbs.
Rummaging through the cookie closet only to be reminded it’s Lent is also a good reminder that it is the Easter season.
I still follow the Catholic faith as laid out in the New Testament. While too many of the Catholic clergy have/had fallen into depravity (and that’s for God to forgive, not me), and I might take issue with some of the hierarchy’s stances on certain issues, none of that diminishes what Jesus taught.

Without going into detail, I can tell you that Good Friday service in a Catholic church is a solemn, creepy sort of experience, and that the inside of a Catholic church on Holy Saturday feels like the emptiest place in the Universe. For a Catholic person, it feels really really weird. And then sunrise service on Easter morning is indescribably joyous.

I am raised Greek Orthodox and Holy week (from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday) I was essentially off the grid. Fasting and going to church was all that was happening.

I especially like the Good Friday service because the chanting of the service is beautiful. And of course there is the midnight resurrection service that is a celebration of re-birth. I had an opportunity to experience the Saturday service in South Africa. The service was celebrated with fireworks which was almost new years eve like. Everyone was hugging and celebrating that Christ had risen. I have never experienced anything like that here at home.

I actually like gefilte fish. I had a neighbor who had his own fish recipe and his were very good. Match that up with matza and a slice of horseradish, it was good eats to me. Life moves on and I miss Passover - I bought a jar of gefilte fish trying to re-live a moment. It is still unopened - sometimes you just can't go back, it isn't the same.
