The Chinese government has reportedly asked some top officials to stop driving their Teslas to work over fears that the vehicles are constantly recording their movements—and even taking video of their surroundings. The Wall Street Journal reports the restrictions apply to some senior figures in government agencies, the military, and state-owned companies. The rule was reportedly introduced after Chinese officials claimed the cars are able to record images through their sensors and store potentially sensitive information such as location data and the contact lists of phones synced to the cars. Tesla didn’t comment on Beijing’s move, but referred back to a previous statement that said its privacy policy “complies with Chinese laws and regulations.” ........................

Meanwhile, in a separate national-security development involving Tesla, a Russian who traveled to the U.S. in an attempt to plant malware on the car maker’s internal network pleaded guilty Thursday, According to a DOJ indictment, Egor Igorevich Kriuchkov, 26, offered a Tesla employee $1 million to install the malware.

My work involves trust and integrity, and I am in litigation often enough (I am not an attorney) including discovery requests, interrogatories, etc. Some folks assume the parties (me, for example) are telling the truth, disclosing documents transparently without editing or falsification.... Occasionally, a party raises suspicions of document falsification, document concealment and event/conversation mischaracterizations. I assume these people are suspicious because they themselves are unethical.

China's suspicions of Tesla have the effect of increasing my suspisions of Huawei.

I've been supporting networks for a bit over 20 years. I started supporting Cisco routers, switches, etc.... Cisco sued Huawei because Huawei stole their code and were using it as their own on their own stuff. Yes, it was the same code because it had the same bugs and misspellings and other bits and bobs as the Cisco code. I wouldn't trust Huawei any further than I could throw them.

On top of that, it's my opinion that ANY and/or every tech product that comes out of China could or has a good chance that it may have software/instructions installed as ordered by the govt.

Yep, I don't trust crap out of China, especially if it's made by a Chinese company.

Chances are, almost everyone posting in this forum has a mostly Chinese parts computer if not actually made in China.

Yes, there are. However, not every part of these components is made in America. Finished components like DRAM and SSDs use domestically-produced NAND wafers. The other parts of the component—circuit boards, controllers, and assembly—are imported from around the globe, mainly China.

I agree with Superman, accusations and suspicions made by Chinese officials are a reflection upon themselves, what they would do or have done.

I'd imagine it's possible to hide instruction code outside of code. Even within benign hardware components which could have wifi capability or backfeed and overwrite main programming after remote triggering. So a simple sensor from an outsourced company might be able to take down the entire structure theoretically. Especially is the bypass mechanism is built in.

Yep, I get that. I assume that there's almost no way around some/most of the parts being from China. I prefer to assume (delude myself?) that it's worse if the stuff is made in China by/for a Chinese company than it is if it's something else (like an Apple or Dell computer)

My ASSu(ME)pmtion is that a chip or even card made in China is probably not quite as suspect as an entire product made in China by a Chinese company.
