Recommendations for RSC
 

Gents, looking for recommendations for a long gun Residential Security Container
( gun safe). 4 - 8 gun capacity w/ storage shelf, etc. Ambivalent on bio-metric vs punch code as this is not my "In Extremis" case. Prefer weight under 200 lbs.
( so I can lug it up to the 2nd deck.) Budget is $500 - $1000.

I'd appreciate some input here. Thank you.

I am going to need one in a few years and am interested in what the recommendations are.

Under 200 pounds isn't going to give you much cement in walls for fire safety rating, in minutes.

Costco occasionally has good sales on safes.

I'm guessing a 200# box to keep long spoons in is basically just a metal box to keep kids and honest folks from accidentally getting at guns. I can't imagine that a 200# box big enough for long spoons is going to be good for actual security (theft) or fire or much else. But then I understand that most gun safes don't really provide much security if the thieves know they are there and came for the contents.

I have this one and it filled up fairly quickly. But I really like it. Tips the scales at 340lbs, a little heavier than you want.

As with nearly any safe, decent thieves will tip onto its side and use a saw to cut in within 3-5 minutes. To help combat that, it's in a closet and I drilled holes in the rear and used large lag bolts to anchor it to the wall hoping they'll give up due to time.

My install gives me a place to hole up during a home invasion. Highly unlikely, but worth consideration.

Don, thanks to you and the others for sharing your information. For the range of container that I am seeking, it is not a safe. Underwriter's Lab refers to them as Residential Security Container. My intent is to keep little hands and curious older hands where they belong. Thieves will be slowed down, especially with bolting unit to a floor joist. Good call on placing the container in a closet. Thanks again for the assist.

For your specs, there is no way you can get a rated RSC. You are just going to get a metal box that won't really slow anyone down except the most incompetent or tool inept. May I suggest an Amsec BF or BF II in whatever size you require? In addition, forget the biometric or electronic locks. Good old fashioned group II combination lock will serve you well. The safes in the class I'm talking about cannot be moved without multiple strong help, especially up stairs.

Go to your local Tractor Supply/sporting goods store and see what they have . Your weight limit of 200 lbs will make it tough to find a true gun safe . A gun safe is a metal fire rated insulation box vs a gun cabinet which is just a metal enclosure . It sounds like a metal gun cabinet is what you want .

My 400lb'er is rated at 1 hr, the 30 min ones have half the drywall (I think that's what's in there) so they would weigh less. I can move mine with an appliance dolly and with a helper, can manage steps. Gotta bolt 'em down, and none will stop a pro. Mebbe a lock on a closet door would be as much of a deterrent as an un-bolted metal cabinet for the OP?

That looks like the one I have but mine has a dial. Appears like the additional 30 min fire rating is 60lbs heavier.

They make safes that can be broken down into six pieces or so for easy transportability. The safes are manufactured in jigs so that they go back together with pins the same way every time. They are pretty high quality and earned a place in the industry. They will provide better security than any of the cheap Chinese-built safes from the box stores. They don't provide any insulation for fire protection. They only use combination locks to stop a lot of the problems with lockouts from the digital-type locks. They are always in demand and lead times can be 14 weeks unless you buy a safe that somebody cancelled on. In my opinion, for your budget and requirements, they are a way better option than the other products you are looking at.
