Great story...I've seen it some time ago. Those who haven't seen "the black ghost" should watch this. The story will bring both smiles and a tear or two.

Indeed. And he laid down as much history as he did rubber.

Great story.

Funny...if he worked for the builder why wasn't he able to order it from the factory?

Either way, cool ride.

My cousin and I actually cruised Woodward Avenue before I even had my license (he drove) in his brand new Chevy Vega. So that must have been the fall of 1970. At the time, the Vega was hot stuff before the myriad problems associated with the Vega arose.

Anyway, these muscle cars would smoke us like we were standing still from light to light no matter what my cousin tried to do they’d haul ass and embarrass us.

Fun times.

60 hp and driving a Vega didn't embarrass you enough?

Heck no!

I couldn’t even drive yet, brand NEW car, Saturday night down Woodward Avenue? I nor my cousin were even car guys. It was exciting.

My cousin did get pizzed because embarrassment. But for me, ‘The jubilation was flowing outta me, you know what I mean?’*

That is a great story. Touched me very much. The timing is amazing.

Godfrey, the owner of the Hemi reminds me so much of my own father. They were born and died in the same year. My father was also a Vietnam veteran and career military. My father ordered a 69 4spd GTO when he got back from Vietnam and I can vividly remember going with him to race his friends just off base.

Today, I spent a couple hours washing and waxing that GTO and thinking about my dad alot. I'm driving it to work tomorrow and want it looking good. I just got it running again a few weeks ago after it had been sitting in my garage since the mid nineties. I know exactly how the son feels when he drives his dads car.

'70 had 90 HP. Then there was a Cosworth Vega. About 3500 of them and they were double the price. These came after a lot of wrangling with the EPA for emissions that went on for 3 years. The prototype produced under John DeLorean had 170 HP. The big boss gave the go ahead after choosing between a V8 302 and a 140HP in-line injected 4. By the time it went on sale it was pared down to 110 HP for reliability. It was 1976 before the public could get one.

The point being it wasn't hard to wring out some extra ponies on the 4. With an AL block and iron head (the Cosworth was a twin cam AL), the cars had a favorable HP to weight ratio.

IDT all were all that embarrassing.

Michael, hope you had a great drive to work. How's that goat run on the refined panther pee California requires? Did you have to do head work?

Hang on to that car. Wish I'd kept my first new car, a white '65 Goat. Hindsight always crystal clear. First drove a Porsche in '66...the Pontiac left me.

No such fond car memories of my Dad...his car love was a 4 door Buick Roadmaster...no luxobarge love here.
