Who's dug their own grease pit?
 

I always thought this would be tres' cool. More practical and a better use of space than a 4 post lift. Get the lighting, air circulation, tool and beverage storage situated and an afternoon maintaining the family buggy would be a pleasure, not a chore.

Better than a one or two post lift...but not a four post.

They're great until the car's not quite lined up and you end up driving into it.

There is one in my shop , I built my office over it . It would be a great place to put an alignment lift, or quickie oil change bay, but my pit is not quite deep enough . Id much rather work off a lift any day .
Imagine cleaning up the oil and coolant spills . Mine was a greasy scary mess of a place, not hospitable in any way . I floored right over that sucker

If you tell any city that you want to dig a grease pit, they will say no way. Carbon monoxide and other bad fumes can collect down there. Spilled oil is likely to get into ground water.

Now if you have the same exact plans, but call it a tornado shelter, no problem. I have a tornado shelter in my garage. It was a large hole. lined with concrete, and then a steel box was lowerd down. We go clean it out each spring. We have not yet ever retreated to in in a storm.

If I removed the steel lid it would work as a pit, but I prefer my scissor lift on the other side of the garage.

would be a strong selling point for an owner.

Not better use of space than a 4 post, two cars in the space of one. I did know someone years ago that had one and the city or insurance made him fill it in. Would probably also require a stamp from an engineer.

The one pictured would cost much more to build than buying a lift.
