Picked up a vintage motorcycle with some racing history.

Yamaha R5/RD 350. Was Dick Fuller‘s personal bike. He raced this bike back in the early 70s. Dick was fairly well known in the California motorcycle racing scene. He later moved to Missouri where he became a part of our BMW Airhead group. Dick passed in 2018 and I have now become the custodian of his bike.

Korbs was the department store in California that sponsored Dick.

Here is a good read on motorcycle racing in California back in the early 70s:

That's sweet.

What are your duties as custodian?

Well, it’s really my bike to do whatever I want with, but I’m going to keep it looking the way Dick restored it.

That was the bike to have in high school.
I took one for a ride and the front wheel came up at 80.

Now that is a cool bike... any one off kit parts installed?

I recall the first time I saw titanium bits was on a TZ750, foot pegs and such.

Beautiful machine, Kurt! Nice backstory too and always nice to see any kind of motorsports history being maintained and preserved.

I'm interested in knowing what year/model BMW Dick owned. I'm assuming he owned one because he was an airhead member.

Thanks for sharing. So cool!

Dick had a red R90 S. I believe it was a 1974. And it was beautiful!

Ha, I was just thinking of High School when I read your comment. A couple of the guys had these. Even the RD250 was a fast and fun bike.

Yup. In lower gears, grip the handlebars tightly if you crack the throttle. These kinds of bikes can leave you sitting on the ground.

Nice, should be a fun toy. Drum brakes have not seen those in quite a while, well since the 70's

Beautiful piece of history, great story. Odd that it still has the factory exhaust unless the class rules mandated it

Very cool bike. A piece of desirable history in your very own garage. Congrats!

Especially with a seat like that.

A friend of mine used to race a Yamaha with a full faring (Tz 250) ?
He was in the process of restoring it when he died. I never asked her what she did with the bike.
Wild machine.

Best

Here’s a picture of him on the actual bike. This was a bit later when the RD 350 came out. The R5 had drum brakes in front and the 350 had a disk.
