Earth Day
 

I remember the first one in 1970. Our school decided to honor it by cleaning up the local road shoulders of trash.
We were dropped off in groups of 3 with trash bags for the day.
Our group was given a mile of road near a gas station/convenience store. The drinking age had just been lowered to 18.....so we proceeded to the store and bought a twelve pack of beer and sat in the sun to think about it.
When the bus returned to pick us up...we turned in our bags that had plenty of cans.

We did our part. :)

My high school gave us one class to make a poster. A pair of students worked on each poster. They would all be placed within the hallway and votes taken for a winner.

I teamed up with a hippy type guy and we made a psychedelic poster. I spiral of green and orange phosphorescent paint. We had a big blob of black paint in the center with a "run" down from the blob.

Our header was...

POLLUTION SUCKS

In tiny letters within the black blob.

The breath out of you.

We were on track to be landslide winners...until it was banned from the competition and removed. Sucks was inappropriate at the time.

It's the new corporate "Look, a squirrel" play. Never mind products that suck, we support "the Planet".

I love trees. They give me wood. :)

We had a cold snap, so I started another fire in our woodstove.

Ira Einhorn wasn't the founder of Earth Day. All he did was give a rambling speech at a rally.
Senator Gaylord Nelson, a republican senator whose name I can't recall, and Denis McClosky started Earth Day.

^^^ I remember being really thankful for the half-day off of school.

The 'good-ole-days' Gas and cigs were both less than 50 cents. Beer was less than $3 for a twelve pack.

The lady at the drive-thru at the bank sent me the tube, I farted in it as I put my deposit in. Sent the tube back, watched her open it. Happy Earth Day!
