2020 Toyota Land Cruiser.
Why do they always come full time 4x4? At least that is how I read it. That kills mpg, no?
And is it really mid $80k? That is approaching 3/4 ton diesel truck territory. Makes the 4Runner look damn near affordable. Thoughts?

Have you ever owned/driven a Land Cruiser?
I have and they're something else... Imagine the most bland off road experience possible. They're almost bullet proof but frankly boring. They wallow around a lot on the highway. I drove one all over most of Northern Australia over a period of 8 years for work. Not flat tires (US made Cooper tires) and no breakdowns in 8 years of hard off road use. Literally nothing broke. And our Aboriginal elders will always choose a white Land Cruiser for their own use.

I suppose its there for convenience so driver wouldn't forget to put it in 4wd? Its kills a bit of mpg but all the LC I know are gets about 13 mpg city driving. I love both 80s series I owned, but you are correct about the 4 runner. I have the latest gen, gen 5, and its an awesome truck. The interior dimension is a bit bigger too, close to the 80 but just not as tall which I liked. My 4 runner only seen the dirt trial once and it was a pretty easy trail. In the snow, it was great, we danced up the steep road to the ski station in Yosemite while others were all over the road with their chains. I didn't have to touch 4wd once. I could have if more grip was needed.

Do you really need 4 wd if you are not in the bush out there? One of my dream is to drive across Australia in a LC. |

Looks like it has a centre diff that can be locked, more like all wheel drive until you lock it up. So not like my old FJ40 when it was in 4wd on the road the MPG went to crap and hard on rubber, also had to unlock the front hubs, the good old days. $80k yikes.

Currently driving a 2015 and love it. A Lexus GX460 in the states, a Landcruiser Prado in the rest of the world....as far as the full time 4WD/awd? Much preferred in this part of the country for me. I have had multiple FJC/4runners with part time 4WD which are great for off road but when it comes to pavement with mixed snow, ice, dry payment back to snow, ect....full time is what you want over 300 mile plus trek. It's exhasting shifting in and out of FT/Pt drive in those conditions and we see them a lot in the winter months.. I doubt the mpg is really affected that much and how is mpg even an conversation when talking LC
![]() And why buy a new one when 30k or less gets you a CPO Lexus with 60k on the clock and it will run trouble free for 300k?

I had an 80 series. 1991 I think. Killer build quality. Gutless and not fun to drive
I have a 100 series now. It was $14k a few years ago and other than drinking gas it is fantastic Took two bike mountain biking today Weeded my rental yesterday with tools and 12 bags of weeds in the back. Have used it to tote the kids to school dances with the back seats installed. Make sales calls all day in it. Nobody hates me like when I drove my SC. Classic. Boring. Reliable. Love that thing. |

Seriously, do as Peter says. If you go off road in Australia do it in a Toyota and bring lots of water to drink.

While I do agree the 200 series is overpriced, it i a whole different animal than a 4Runner. I currently own an 80 and have owned four 4Runners (currently a 2019 5th gen). Land Cruisers are made to survive the apocalypse, a 4Runner is good, but not that level of good. Having said that, even the 200 series is fragile. The 4WD 24/7 (aka 4WD Action) guys in Australia recently built up a 200 series with the guys from Sparesbox and it promptly broke a CV on the trails. Check out their youtube channel - it's awesome.
To me, Toyota should market the 200 series as a Lexus and then import the 70 series for those of us who really want to use a Land Cruiser as a Land Cruiser... I'd pay good money for a 78 series troopy.

I have had Land Cruisers before I bought my 1996 Series 80 from a friend of mine last year.
It had 114K on it when I bought it and now has 129K ![]() I love the thing. It is not a rocket ship or a Cayenne in the curves but it's mine and it makes me happy. ![]() Btw, we are finally parting ways with the 2003 4Runner we bought from OWP in 2005. The kids are all on the East Coast and we want to travel a bit more than we have in the past few years. 265K with no real issues. Make a great college/HS ride. ![]() We are replacing it with a new 4Runner. Not cheap but it will be my wife's car and she deserves it...that plus we keep cars a minimum of ten years. So to the OP, if you plan on keeping the new Land Cruiser I can't imagine why not taking the plunge. If we were buying the new car for me I would seriously consider the LC new.

I've driven and ridden in armored variants in A-Stan. Concur with all other comments re slow and ponderous. However, outside of a VBIED attack or large land-mine, I was quite certain I was going to make it through whatever came our way. This of course speaks to the quality of the armor bolt-on's, but all other aspects of the Land Cruiser were first rate. My four cents...

I was under the impression the GX is 4Runner based, LX Land Cruiser based.

I'll make you a good, no great, deal...it has been a flawless car for us. Just serviced and the tires and brakes are excellent.
If it was a 100 mile radius DD we'd keep it. But my wife wants to travel more and I prefer to keep the miles off my 2015 Tundra. The last thing I want to do is buy another 1/2 ton truck. ![]()
