Another Great Song

Lately, there have been a few threads about songs we like. I love this version of Shakedown Street. Just incredible. I never thought Jerry could be replaced, but John Mayer is amazing.

Skip ahead to 1:42.

"Replaced" is an awfully big word but I fully understand your intent. Mayer has blown me away too. He doesn't try to imitate Garcia but rather plays his style and it fits in really well. It's amazing how much respect he has gained over the past couple years. Much more than when he was a pop playing douche canoe. I hope they continue for a while. Here is an awesome Sugaree.

best business decision he could have made. he certainly won me over and probably a few million others that didn’t care a bit about him. long after bobby and the guys are gone, i’ll still check out mayer because of what he has done with dead & co. as a guitar player myself, gotta admit i’m envious as hell

I, too, as a guitar player am envious as hell. I'm a good guitar player. Just good. It's very frustrating that I can't even be really good. Oh well, I have fun in my living room, anyway.

I think Mayer found his true self when he discovered the magic of Jerry Garcia. He was a little familiar of the Dead's music until he heard Althea in 2011. He spent the next two years playing nothing but Dead tunes and the rest is history.

BTW, the Shakedown version is from Wrigley Field on 6-30-17. The whole show is incredible. An even better Sugaree, IMO. Check out the set list:

Mayer has mad skills but I find them playing a little too slow.
I have a hard time with listening to them because my mind keeps comparing

Someone said it’s like a 45 record played on 33. That sums it up pretty good. But I appreciate they are making something new and not trying to duplicate the past.

i’ve had a hard time with the slow tempo too. the guys are old. mickey has issues with his hands/wrists. it is what it is. they can still rip on faster tunes like cumberland blues though. seeing them in person it didn’t bother me so much but watching the shows online it gets noticeable. still, i’ll take what i can get

Guitar player here. You dont need thrash metal to get your point across, some times, bending stings, vibrato and mild hammer ons and hammer offs get the point across. Speed is good sometimes, but not necessary for good classic rock and roll and the rythem and blues..http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1619871703.jpg

What's your point here? What does thrash metal have to do with the Dead or Blackmore?

I asked you what your post is trying to say. I've been playing guitar for 35 years and know how to play a lot of Blackmore. Yeah, I know he's not speed metal.

Dude, the greatful dead is from Californy, Deep Purple is from England? Wtf are you on about? You claim to play guitar, I make a statement and you seem to be triggered, Dude its ok, breathe in and out. You for some reason think you have to right a wrong. I have no idear who you are, and frankly I dont care. I have been playing the plank o wood since 1977, and I think I might know something. Put up a video of you playing, and i might believe you, other wise, chill...;)

Nostril Cheese 05-01-2021 04:47 AM

You put a picture of Blackmore, talk abut thrash metal in a thread about the Dead. Clarify yourself.

No shows where I live, the SF Bay Area. Go figure. They'll probably add some shows around here, most likely a few shows at New Years.

How many NY shows are you going to?

ramonesfreak 05-21-2021 02:17 AM

just the one on 8/25 near buffalo

i could make it to saratoga on 8/27 but with 2 dogs, we gotta come home after and the last time i saw them there, the 4 hour drive back after the show was not fun at all so i think i’ll skip it
