Another Great Song
Lately, there have been a few threads about songs we like. I love this version of Shakedown Street. Just incredible. I never thought Jerry could be replaced, but John Mayer is amazing.

"Replaced" is an awfully big word but I fully understand your intent. Mayer has blown me away too. He doesn't try to imitate Garcia but rather plays his style and it fits in really well. It's amazing how much respect he has gained over the past couple years. Much more than when he was a pop playing douche canoe. I hope they continue for a while. Here is an awesome Sugaree.

I think Mayer found his true self when he discovered the magic of Jerry Garcia. He was a little familiar of the Dead's music until he heard Althea in 2011. He spent the next two years playing nothing but Dead tunes and the rest is history. BTW, the Shakedown version is from Wrigley Field on 6-30-17. The whole show is incredible. An even better Sugaree, IMO. Check out the set list: Set I The Music Never Stopped bw Bertha jm Me and My Uncle bw Sugaree jm Let It Grow bw > Uncle John’s Band *bw jm Set II Shakedown Street bw > Dark Star bw > St. Stephen bw > China Doll ob > Lady With A Fan jm > Terrapin Station bw > Uncle John’s Band reprise > Drums/ Space > Standing On The Moon bw > Piano Intro > Help On The Way jm > Slipknot! > Franklin’s Tower jm Encore: Ripple * bw jm US Blues bw jm |
Mayer has mad skills but I find them playing a little too slow.
I have a hard time with listening to them because my mind keeps comparing <iframe width="601" height="451" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/7ajY_gQykbY" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> <iframe width="601" height="413" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/V70MrjzLFyo" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> That 1978 set is sooo good. I have a hard time with listening to them because my mind keeps comparing Someone said it’s like a 45 record played on 33. That sums it up pretty good. But I appreciate they are making something new and not trying to duplicate the past. |
i’ve had a hard time with the slow tempo too. the guys are old. mickey has issues with his hands/wrists. it is what it is. they can still rip on faster tunes like cumberland blues though. seeing them in person it didn’t bother me so much but watching the shows online it gets noticeable. still, i’ll take what i can get

Guitar player here. You dont need thrash metal to get your point across, some times, bending stings, vibrato and mild hammer ons and hammer offs get the point across. Speed is good sometimes, but not necessary for good classic rock and roll and the rythem and blues..http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1619871703.jpg
