Old GE electric motor runs intermittently.
I have an old attic fan I want to convert to a mobile shop fan. It has a 1/3 HP motor that when powered buzzes until the pulley is spun by hand, then turns on and off intermittently. Pic of the tag - not that it makes any difference. The unit is from the mid 50's and there is no external capacitor mounted. Any help is appreciated.

Not an expert, but I think some older motors have some sort of centrifugal starting circuit switch that changes the windings from start to run, open it up and take a look.

The start winding is worn out. Time for a new motor.

Might be bearings.
Bearings dragging, hard start, trips on thermals. Bearings dragging while running? Pulls higher amps, trips on thermals. Belt driven? Alignment and belt tension make a difference too. Do you have an ammeter? (clamp on) From the looks of that one, you got your moneys worth long ago!

I'm guessing starting winding too.
I would take it apart and check the centrifugal switch, and continuity of the windings. It might be repairable, it might need a pull start added....
