If you have the means to set aside 2k - 3k for possible future repairs do so and add to it . In that scenario an aftermarket warranty is not needed . But if scraping that amount together is in the hard pile then maybe a policy is worth it .

Talk to the dealership that you use for service , and see what is available and what does it cover . Compare the cost vs paying for repairs on your own and the decision should be clear . Everyone's situation is different .

Wow! I think if you can document the number of times you've had the issue and they've failed to actually fix the issue that you'd be able to go to Honda customer care and they'd do something for you.

I love Hondas engines. My 2006 Acura RSX Type-S went 240,000 miles with NO engine repairs, but I changed the oil every 4000 miles. I finally had to replace the worn out clutch, worn out transmission (synchros) and worn out dampers. Other than that, it was headlight bulbs, brake pads and rotors, and tires.

Selling it was stupid, but after I retired, I had too many cars.

Does your state have lemon law for cars?

We had a dealer band-aid an oil leak twice. Third time I reminded them of the lemon law, and they finally pulled the pan, and changed the gaskets.

At 100K on the ODO I think that's out the window.

What does the extended warranty cover?
How much is the premium?
How much is the deductible?

The companies that offer them aren't losing money. They pay out 80 or 90% of what they take in. You may end up being the guy that receives more benefit. Or you could be one of the 9 others that pay in more than the benefit they receive.

If you can self insure then do so. Earn a little on the money you have put aside. If you can't afford repairs then buy the policy though the odds are you won't receive as much in benefit as you pay in.

Extended warranties are insurance policies. They can be good if you know what you are buying and what is covered. It would also be beneficial to purchase the warranty through the dealership as they will have a relationship with the company.

As with any insurance it is important to know what is covered, what the deductible is, the limits of coverage and most importantly your responsibilities and maintenance procedures to ensure you are not denied.

I had a 2006 Jeep Commander Limited from new a notoriously problematic Chrysler product. at around 68,0000 miles I purchased a five year 100,000 mile extended warranty on the drive train only. Engine, ECU, transmission, transfer case, etc. Anything that involved making the car move. Not the radio, body panels, power seats or anything like that. I paid $1,500.00 for the warranty. That's less than a dollar a day. Coverage also ceased once the value of the vehicle was met in repairs.

My responsibility was to follow all manufacturers maintenance procedures and document. Oil and fluid changes, mileage maintenance, etc. While the warranty permitted me to do my own work or use an independent, I chose to have everything performed by the Jeep dealer then there was no question if the maintenance was done or when or if correctly.

I had many, many times the cost of the warranty paid for including a rebuilt transmission and they paid for a rental car while the transmission was being rebuilt. My deductible was the first $100.00 of each covered repair.

I was completely satisfied with my purchase.

READ THE FINE PRINT . Some of them are ruthless. We have this lady customer with 2 cars covered under a contract with american auto shield . A boxster and a 528 xt.
In the 2 years I have been servicing her cars, they have not covered one single claim. Not one . All , regular, run of the mill repairs that my shop sees on a daily basis .
I also would not waste my money if I had a Honda Civic at 100k. Not too much more reliable than that .
They probably will not cover computer reflash , and usually do not pay diagnostic time

I never buy extended warranties (never have) or even insurance coverage for items that I can easily absorb the loss or repair out-of-pocket.... it's just how I roll.

I could easily buy a new car with what I didn't spend on "insurance" over the years... so... tumbling dice it is ;)

Chocaholic 05-06-2021 05:05 AM

Ditto. High profit for the insurer. Very high.

Put your premium dollars aside. My guess is those premium dollars will more than cover repairs you’ll need.

If the warranty company can make a buck on this, then so can you.

Unless you have some sort of crazy time-bomb...

Think old Italian cars. Probably best to move the risk to someone else.

I don't think extended service contracts on cars well out of warranty are good deals. IMO better to evaluate if you'd be better served getting another car and cutting this one loose. It appears Honda is not immune to computer issues, at least with the one you have. Maybe you can research for one not prone to these issues.

Heavens forbid. You may need to join the Honda forum somewhere. The computer reset may be a simple as unpluging this and that.

I bought an aftermarket warranty (against my better judgement) when I bought my new 2011 Odyssey. After 100k miles with no claims, I got the full amount of the policy back (less $50 handling). As has been mentioned you need to be a lawyer to understand what they will cover and quite often they don’t cover much.

On a side note, I also have a 2016 Civic and the radio in mine is weird too...and the rain sensor wipers are useless. Nice car other than that.

Some dealers offer a promo like that. It doesn't show up very often, but it's a good incentive. They're hoping you'll make a small claim or forget.

Chocaholic 05-07-2021 03:16 AM

Good choice.
