Hard to believe DM's Violator is 30 years old. I remember buying that on tape brand new.

I like Cash's version better.

Martin Gore himself, of Depeche Mode has gone on the record to say that Johnny Cash's cover version of "Personal Jesus" is the only one that counts.

Funny. I was in Santa Monica for work just before the Cash album. Trying out expensive guitars. The guy in the store said “Johnny Cash was playing that one yesterday.”

I guess he was looking for an axe for the recording.

I remember seeing him open for Nine Inch Nails 25 years ago. (where did the time go?)

Depeche Mode's version is good because they created the song as a social commentary and sing it with real meaning and deep feelings. Johnny Cash's version is even better because he changes the song to be a social commentary about having an actual personal relationship with Jesus and sings it with deep feeling. Marilyn Manson's version was awful because he gave the song no meaning and sang with no feeling other than a derivative attempt to be offensive.

social commentary?? The song was inspired by the book Elvis and Me by Priscilla Presley. Gore stated :

"It's a song about being a Jesus for somebody else, someone to give you hope and care. It's about how Elvis Presley was her man and her mentor and how often that happens in love relationships; how everybody's heart is like a god in some way, and that's not a very balanced view of someone, is it?"
