I Hate Home Depot.

So the dishwasher in one of our rentals starts leaking water on the floor, which is wide pine boards, so NFG. I called our local appliance store that we buy from, and find out that they couldn't get one for me until September, since just about everything except the wrong part is backordered. He advises checking a Big Box.

I found one at Home Depot that could be delivered yesterday, crossed my fingers and ordered it. After sitting around with my thumb up my ass during the 4 hour delivery window, they finally arrived. Guy goes in the kitchen to uninstall the old one, and says we've got a problem, since the installers are only equipped with 4 foot supply hoses, and our setup requires an 8 footer. They advise that I take the 4 footer to Home Depot to exchange it for an 8 footer, they'll leave the dishwasher on the porch, and I can call to have them come back to install and haul the old one.

I drove to HD (about 10 miles away), swapped the hose, came back to call the install/delivery people to reschedule, and the earliest they can get back is next Wednesday. ARRRRRGH!! If I hadn't been so pissed while they were there, I would have thought the logical thing and told them to use the old hose and be done with it, BUT NOOOOO.
To the idiots at Home Depot...one size hose does not fit all, equip your installers with several sizes to cover instances like this

Why did you go to HD for an 8 foot hose when it appears they could have installed the old one had you thought about it?

dafischer 05-07-2021 01:32 PM

Because I didn't think about it until I had gotten the damn hose, as I was quite pissed.

HD often subs that install work out to independent contractors; so I wouldn't blame them much. I'd blame the fella who didn't have the hose or the fella who didn't even know he needed to buy the hose.

When I spoke to the delivery/install contractor, I was told that HD provides them with the installation materials.

Gogar 05-07-2021 01:44 PM

Well...
Of course he said that.

I'd say don't take offense but you might anyway, but plural rental properties and you can't install a dishwasher?

I've done many and it could hardly be easier.

I don't understand from your initial story why you were angry when they were there the first time. Seems like they were on your side trying to get the appliance installed.

First world problems.

Yep. I'm with ^^. If I paid for installation, I'd be asking for a refund after I did it myself.

They let us walk our dogs inside.

Things like cleaning supplies and paper towels are sometimes cheaper there.

The only place in town to get hot tub chemicals.

Otherwise...can’t think of a good reason to go.

Sometimes. I’ve had 2 where they installed flooring after the dishwashers were in place. They were basically trapped in a hole under the counter. Fun.

I once read a statement on this forum saying "If HD were the only place to buy nails, I would learn how to make my own nails."

HD came out for a microwave install. When they got there the guy said my existing unit sat too low with the edge 1/4" above the backsplash, they require 1" or more. he was worried about chipping the granite.

I said "No problem, if you chip it I'll repair it myself, I'll sign a waiver". No can do.

I said "You guys go to the truck, leave me one guy and I'll come get you when the old unit is removed". No can do. I ended up calling my buddy and we installed it. HD refunded the $120.

I've run into that and agree that's it's not fun. But if a guy who installs dishwashers for HD for a living can handle it ...

The biggie that kept me away from HD was when I was putting new linoleum in a rental unit in Frazier Park (5,000 ft elevation, winter with snow on the ground). The guy came and looked at the job and saw the asphalt tile. Said "We can't install over asphalt tile, it has to be removed". I said "Ok, how much to remove it?". He comes back "No can do. Might be asbestos". I said Well, how about sheeting over the tile and laying the linoleum on that?" He said "We can't do that either, you'll have to do it and we'll lay the flooring when you're done".

So I go back to HD, sheet the whole floor, they come back and put down the linoleum. 3 weeks later it's developing huge air pockets and the flooring is coming up. Call them again to come look at it.

"Sorry, we don't guarantee any flooring where we didn't do the prep work on the floor. YGBFKM.

What's hard to believe, Dave, is that between all of you there for the install.......NO ONE thought about just re-using the existing hose?

Ouch!

Ouch!

That was my question.

That's what I was thinking. I'd have it installed, and ask them to come pick up the old one, or advertise it someplace leaking, cheap or something. Most appliances are pretty easy to install.

I wouldn't trust a HD installer any further than I could throw them.

pwd72s 05-07-2021 04:06 PM

You just described why I have a good relationship with a locally owned appliance shop.

Well in their defense, they’re hardly installers. Really just moving men with a set of channel locks and a 4-1 screwdriver.
