Economics common sense

https://www.foxbusiness.com/politics/north-dakota-end-federal-unemployment-assistance-programs-job-openings-surge
Quote:
"After fighting through severe stress and financial hardship, many North Dakota businesses that survived the pandemic are now facing an unprecedented labor shortage as they attempt to recover," Burgum said in a statement. "These federal unemployment programs were meant to supplement state benefits and provide short-term relief for displaced and vulnerable workers, and these programs have accomplished their goals but are now counterproductive."
Time to encourage people to work instead of freeload.

While I'm sure there were lots of people who lost their job during covid and truly needed the extra money, when there is a "Help Wanted" sign on damn near every window these days, clearly those days are over.

Exactly. I remember hearing decades ago that all things being equal, the population of North Dakota will always decrease.

I teach in a dental assisting program. For every student I have, there have been two doctors looking for assistants.

The counterpoint to this is that if basic government benefit is more than wages, perhaps wages aren’t in line with the need. Supply and demand works in both directions. Want help? Pay more.

I don’t know where the balance point is nor will i speculate, but this isn’t a one directional equation.

Haha, is that serious?
Pretty hard for any real paying job to compete with a sit-at-home-all-day welfare “job.”
To many, having to show up and work for pay is highly overrated.

Imagine the mom & pop donut shop in Fargo trying to compete wage-wise with the largess of the state and/or Federal government.

Some supply & demand free market!

That same Mom & Pop donut shop having to offer $15 an hour for one employee that shows up sporadically, and does a subpar job when actually present, is not very business wise.

We have created a real catch 22 with allowing the lazy people to see the other side, and can't go back to normal now...the damage has been done already !

It's odd that you consider the truth about what's going on to be hate based. We're paying people to not work. More states need to do what ND is doing. We need to stop making it more profitable to stay at home than to work.

At $300/wk additional UE from the federal, that's 7.50/hr based on 40 hours.

If the list in this link is accurate, average weekly UE in ND is $406 so that's $10/hr they're getting in UE from the state based on 40 hours. Put the two together and they're making $17.50/hr to stay home. To entice someone to go to work you'd need to offer them more than $20/hr just to make it worthwhile and that's IF they're not already doing work under the table or doing odd jobs for cash right now.
https://www.cnbc.com/2020/07/23/average-unemployment-insurance-payment-in-each-us-state.html

Granted, the number I'm using is an average. But still if you look at what's going on, it's not hate based to see that we're not doing anyone a real service right now. There are plenty of jobs available.

How much total government benefit does an unemployed N Dakota resident receive per month?

How much does a full time doughnut shop worker earn per month (no idea on pay, assume minimum wage?)

Just ran the UE calculator for a person making $9/hr in ND
Weekly state benefits would be $180 so 4.50/hr based on 40
Federal UE.. $300 so 7.50
Total: $12/hr

State minimum wage: 7.25

Hard to compete with UE if you're hiring for minimum wage.

Yeah because the democrats have done an OUTSTANDING job of raising people from poverty. (sarc)

This shouldn't be in PARF but naturally some folks just can't help but make EVERYTHING political.

Comments like these are what make it sound hate-based:

"Time to encourage people to work instead of freeload."

The subject could be discussed without disparaging a whole segment of the population. There are many reasons businesses are looking for jobs and good reasons people aren't going to work. If you have to pay $10 an hour per child for child care in order to go work at a $15 job it makes sense to stay home and take care of your kid. Taking away the unemployment subsidy isn't going to change that, it's only going to make life harder for the parents.
Unemployment subsidies should be kept in place until schools are open.

Hopefully he won’t reverse this decision after pressure from members of his party who reside to the FAR left.
