With traffic or against traffic.
When you're walking in the street, not the sidewalk, do you walk with or against traffic?
When I was a tadpole I was taught to walk against traffic. These days, when I go out for a long walk it seems like I'm swimming upstream because a large percentage of people now jog and walk with traffic. Did something change, and are the road rules for pedestrians somehow different? (I didn't notice this phenomena until Covid forced all of us to start getting exercise) |
Against traffic on foot, with traffic on a bicycle

With all the distracted drivers these days, you want to face traffic and be ready to jump in the ditch at any time.

On a bike trail...it's worse.
A lot of walkers stick to the left because of what they learned as a child. It leads to a lot of confusion. |

I walk against the traffic. If I'm going to get run over, I want to see it coming so I can at least try to jump out of the way. Different when biking of course, but I don't really ride on heavily trafficked streets if I can avoid it.

I don't think a day goes by when I don't observe "rocket scientists" completely disregarding any semblance of common sense - as it pertains to highway/traffic/bicycling/pedestrian protocol. This morning I was working at one of my monthly accounts when this chick is walking her dog down the street I'm working off. Narrow 2 lane island road. She's going against traffic but so busy on her phone she's not even aware of any vehicles trying to get by - however- her dog is left on his own out in the roadway - on a leash but might as well not be the way this idiot is clueless. Then a little later she's going the opposite way but just stands in the road when vehicles are approaching when there's PLENTY of room on the shoulder to step off. I wouldn't give 2 chits except for the Yellow Lab that was sadly at the mercy of it's nitwit human. Every day I see this kind of stuff....... |
With Traffic. Preferably Low Spark of High Heeled Boys
Oh wait, you meant car traffic. Against. I don't trust granny, moms in minivans, teens on their phones... <iframe width="601" height="451" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/rEZH0t5Yozw" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
Walking against traffic, I was still hit by a car.
Stupid woman on her phone. |

I got news for them. It will be because of freaking women on their freaking phones! |

I remember riding my Stingray with traffic as a kid and an old guy in a VW bug clipped my handlebar. Sent me flying into the grass. He stopped and I was ok, but it could have been worse. |

Now ya hold up traffic (for miles) in front of cars on a bicycle :D |

I mostly stick to MTB trails now . . . |

Against with foot. With on bike. To add a sub rant - preferably without headphone/or face buried in smart phone as one is doing so. Otherwise, John Barleycorn must die. I drive into work in a college town in pre-dawn hours. Lots of pedestrians. Amazing how low visibility some people are, even with reflective garb. Pedestrians need to see the cars coming at them to be able to react if they are not seen. |
