OP seems to be one of those people who can't help trying to PARF up everything because they have only one thing to say and want to say it everywhere.

I love Portland and my SO and I will be there and on the coast for a week soon to spend time with good friends who live there - can't wait.

You may be thinking of Pok Pok, which Andy Richter closed recently. That place permanently changed what I thought about Thai food, but Thai food in Portland kept moving.

Langbaan is fantastic: https://langbaanpdx.com/

Agreed. My favorite is Blue Star: https://www.bluestardonuts.com/

Thanks, was it started in a house? This article in Food & Wine magazine was from as much as 10 years ago and IIRC the restaurant was in a guy's house. He went to Thailand, found the right chilis, copied the grilles and set up shop at his house.

Langbaan looks pretty new. Thats across the street from the Laurelhurst Theater in one of those gaudy condo deals.

With the mayhem confined to a city block, I have to say after watching that video they have some damn big effin blocks in Seattle and Portland!

SF used to be one of the greatest cities in the world. Herb Caen called it "Baghdad by the Bay". It still is pretty awesome, but I dont remember the homeless street crime thing being as bad when I was a kid as it is now. They always seemed to have weirdos, just not violent ones like they do now. My GF categorically refuses to go back. I'd like to go to Union Square and do some shopping. Even my suggestion to go to the high end stores did nothing to sway her. Of course, my real objective is to go to House of Prime Rib again. The street bums were and are the reason to not go back.

Truthfully, some folks just aren't cut out for city living. Living in a soulless, perfectly manicured suburb full of chain restaurants and over made-up, fake-tanned (and titted) Stepford-wives driving overpowered SUVs just does not appeal to me. Nothing wrong with that, if it's what you're into.

I think every place has gotten worse.

Union Square is fine except maybe at 3 am. The Walgreen's thefts turned out to be organized crime.

I go to SFO for the fog.

well that does actually explain the crush of grungy pale flat chested emo chicks walking around in Army boots in the inner cities of America.

Don't get me wrong. I freakin love the thought of getting into a bloody knife fight in some Chinatown alley. It't the GF who is against it. I think it was the Sky/ Sea/ Sky/ Sea driving on the hills that did it. And the fact that she had to drive among pedestrians who seem to flop in front of the car out of nowhere.

Seems to me the stastitics indicate a massive change for the worse.

Yeah, pockets may be ok.
And yeah, some pockets are getting a lot worse.

I'm looking at a place on track to pass it's yearly record murder rate.
Medical advancements in dealing with gun shot wounds resulting in increased survivals from attempted murders mean that a match or uptick from previous record is even worse than a surface look.

Poverty follows crime.
Crime targets the weak, and the weak will lose any attempt to strengthen.
If you're strong, or in a strong area, not as big a problem to you.
It then becomes a question of your compassion being present or not when you view what is happening to other parts and times of the city.

I have a little more faith than some of you, I think that some problems sort of solve themselves, eventually.

I thought about this thread as I drove through Portland tonight. Perfect 75 degree day with a perfect evening following. People out, walking, eating, drinking. Looked like no Covid. Drove from deep east side down Division. It was pretty close to idyllic.

Of course deep east side has many many problems...

Inner east side was just fantastic. Passed the old Pok Pok. Passed the $6 ice cream store. Passed a bunch of awesome taco shacks.

If I made a video you would end this thread now. It was gorgeous tonight.
