Gray - shiny primer vehicles

There seems to be a new trend in auto-paint. Lots of the new cars are this shiny grayish color that is then clear coated. It looks like someone primed a card, wet sanded it and then applied clearcoat.

Not a fan

expatriot98 05-16-2021 10:55 AM

Me neither. Youtube channel Rich Rebuilds has done that with wrap on 2 or 3 cars.

Yeah, none of 'em are right for '64/'65 356 Dolphin Grey (code 6410)

red-beard 05-16-2021 11:57 AM

These are new vehicles. Like this

Did someone say “shiny primer”? That’s what guys around here call my color. Actually 2010 sport classic grey. I love it.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1621195051.jpg

Looks cool.

Sort of a "pastel" color?

onewhippedpuppy 05-16-2021 12:45 PM

I don’t mind that color as long as the finish is gloss. Not a fan of matte paint.

Noah930 05-16-2021 12:55 PM

Hasn't that grey (Nardo Grey/Dolphin Grey) been the cool color for new cars for the past couple years? Just like how bright blues (a la Miami Blue or Mexico Blue) were the cool colors all car manufacturers featured maybe 5-10 years ago?

red-beard 05-16-2021 12:57 PM

Meh

greglepore 05-16-2021 02:13 PM

yeah, Toyota seems to be the guilty instigator here, see tons of Tacoma's in glossy primer grey here. Never thought of it as primer + clear, but having shot more paint than I want to admit, sure looks like that's it.

unclebilly 05-16-2021 05:21 PM

They call it ‘cement’. It has pearl in it and in certain light, looks ok. It’s not for me either.

A friend bought a new Ford this colour 18 months ago... I asked him if he got a deal because it didn’t come with the paint job... he didn’t think I was funny.

I thought it was out of style by now. I remember like 15 years ago I think Audi first did it on the TT and it was all the rage and slowly spread to other manufacturers. Not a fan of it either. I guess it looks different to people that dont paint and never saw a car in primer

masraum 05-16-2021 06:51 PM

I'm not getting the "battleship gray" paint that seems to be going around. I'm also not getting the matte/satin olive drab (looks like GI Joe plastikote).

I think Porsche has the battleship gray, and I've seen it on a few vehicles. Porsche makes it look good, but it's low on the list of stuff that looks good on a Porsche.

WPOZZZ 05-16-2021 06:54 PM

Battleship gray is nice, but played out.

My 3 year old Harley is actually called Gunship Grey. I am not a fan of tons of chrome and I like the color, it hides the dead bugs, which this bike is built for, putting on the miles....

Coverman 05-16-2021 09:42 PM

My daughter's Cayman is in that Porsche grey, ordered by her. It was their new colour 2 years ago apparently.
Son-in- laws new Range Rover Sport Plug-in Hybrid is wrapped in Matt black.
They have different taste to me, that's for sure.

LWJ 05-17-2021 02:55 AM

I like the Toyota colors. They strike me as different from the typical metal-flake bland commuter typical colors.

Flat wraps? No.

svandamme 05-17-2021 03:21 AM

I think Porsche came out with it on the 992

It does look nice in person, but not sure it will age well.. I think it will look boring in time when everybody else does it.

I like the Porsche color Chalk but it is becoming too common (I saw two Caulk Caymans at the track last weekend). I wonder how it will be viewed years from now.

flipper35 05-17-2021 07:46 AM

Love the Challenger in general, hate this color with a passion.
