Hackers

I was talking to my wife about the hacking of the pipeline control equipment. I keep thinking this is like a James Bond movie. Someone trying to corner the market on gold, or stealing a nuclear weapon or making biological weapons and then demanding ransom from the world.

And then it hit me. This is almost the exact plot to the worst movie in the world: "Hackers". A guy creates the "Da Vinci Virus". The virus is affecting the controls on oil tankers. The hacker demands money or the tankers capsize.

All we need now are the terrible/awful/fake visuals on how computers work.

Here is a gratuitous terrible picture of Angelina Jolie

Wow, that's probably the least attractive that I've ever seen AJ look. She was better looking when she was dying of AIDS in "Gia."

red-beard 05-17-2021 05:28 PM

There were actually a lot worse pictures of her from that movie

Like you'd turn her down in any instance. right.... =)

Oddly enough, I've never actually seen it. Seems really weird since I think I'm about the right age, and "hackers" should have been an interest to me.

She's an amazingly sexy woman. Hell no.

The pipeline and its operational systems were never hacked, the company did a controlled shutdown of the pipeline because their accounting system for how they got paid was hacked. As always, its about the $$$

Scott Douglas 05-17-2021 06:40 PM

The problem is, it's not just pipeline company's getting hacked.

looneybin 05-17-2021 07:15 PM

But there’s no possible way the dominion voting system was hacked
Riiiiiiight

In some movies her character is pretty hot. Laura Croft is pure teenager fantasy brought to life. She has some movies where she is very hot, but in real life, I totally agree with you no way.

This. As long as people fall for social engineering there will be issues. As long as companies have weak IT departments there will be issues. As long as people keep paying out for ransomware there will be issues.

What we need to do to prevent these attacks is send Liam Neeson after them. :D

I love you guys. nowhere else can a subject like Hacking start up, and immediately go to a discussion on the merits of A Jolie's beauty. hahaha.

I laugh at how TV shows depict Hackers. its like they can work magic. take the show Criminal Minds. damn near every crime was solved by the Hacker. I watched every episode because of AJ COOK. the hottest TV actress ever...

vash 05-18-2021 09:04 AM

oh sorry. where are my manners?

I find it hard to believe that they paid actual ransom money to have that resolved. Wouldn't you go to a previous day 'tape' backup of the network, or have someone outside find the trojan and eliminate it?

Absolutely, the chubby girl with the computers nails it every time. Kind of like Abby in NCIS (NCIS always had lookers, including Abby)

Absolutely, smokin' hot and that's not even a good pic of her. She's much more attractive in the show when she's not model-thin.

I don't know. Colonel Wilma Deering was up there with the original Linda Carter Wonder Woman. I think there was, on average, more attractive actresses in the 70s and 80s than now. There are good looking ones now, but you didn't have to look as hard back then to find one.

Nostril Cheese 05-18-2021 01:57 PM

I've seen Angelina Jolie in person. about three years ago in a Thousand Oaks CVS. She's scrawny. Like seriously, seriously thin. She didnt look healthy.

Hope she is doing better now

A good hacker/malware goes after the backups as well. As someone that does security as part of my job people would be shocked at how much is going on all day, everyday. Your Internet is constantly being probed, I could go on for days on this, really coordinated groups/Govs do their research on your website, social media, etc. I see company websites that show the type of control systems a company uses and sure enough they are constantly scanned for those control system ports on all their public IP’s.

Of course it’s so much easier just to drop something via a phish email, or just social engineer a company: https://youtu.be/lc7scxvKQOo

That lower lip looks like it hurts (AJ).

red-beard 05-18-2021 03:08 PM

According to lore, they called AJ "Duck Lips" in high school

Hack physics and make flying wheelchairs.

But isn't the data overwritten at some point in the backup? Say your network information is completely backed up overnight for say 1 week straight. Then the next back up is completely overwritten?

The higher end disaster recovery stuff is a little better insulated against being infected but even those can get infected as well because sometimes you are infected for weeks to months and don't know it. By the sounds of it this company did not have state of the art stuff and just paid/had insurance pay the ransom to cut down on recovery time.

Depends on the software.

There was a thread on this in PARF in which Sooner or Later linked a lot of Ransomware attacks.

There were many cases where from the time the ransomrare "got in" and when they made the demands there was an extensive delay.
They could have been corrupting what would get backed up during that time.

I'll second the AJ comment!

I would turn her down in every instance. I find her repellent.
