Best sport hatchback for new driver under $6k?
...my new driver prefers the 5 doors.
...I prefer something under $6k so,when the inevitable dings and fender benders happen, I won’t lose any sleep over it. Go!

Trouble with 6K sport hatchbacks is that most have already had at least one driver who has driven the nuts off it and not necessarily maintained it to schedule. A regular hatchback will be a better but unless you are lucky enough to find that unicorn one mature owner, full service history, vehicle.

Man under 6k is going to be rough in this market. You will be looking at beat to death MK6 golfs, or nicer but older mk5s, but they are going to be 3 door.
The non ST Ford Focus is still kind of sporty, but even in the bad trim it’s going to be hard to hit that price point. |

Deals are still out there....I just bought an 85k mile 2015 gti (mk7) manual for 11k...with some patience you can find a base golf, mk6 for $6k. Private seller, look for one advertised at 7-8k, bring cash

Toyota Matrix, not that sporty unless you find the XRS with a 5 Speed.
But is pretty much bulletproof and cheap to maintain. |

I agree with Porsche4Life, it is going to be really hard to find something in that price range right now but my vote goes for Ford Fiesta.

Buy a $5k VW hatch and spend some money on the suspension and tires.

We’ve owned the past two generation GTI’s happily. So that would be our default but wondering if there are others I should be considering.
I should clarify when I say “sport” I mean “sporty looking” i don’t actually care if if drives sporty. Just for arguments sake, if we upped it to 10k what would you do other than the GTI?

I think any running decent modernish car is a bit rare at 6k these days. 6k seems to be the new 4k.
I would say a fit if it is big enough.

Toyota RAV4 with a V6 in it has 300 hp and is very quick and sporty. Dependable too.

I’m in the enviable position of needing to shop for a kid’s “first car” right now, too.
The market is horrible!!! I’m spoiled because my daughter got a grandparent’s hand-me-down 2007 Subaru Forester with <50k miles. Try to replicate that for kid #2 for less than about $12k-$15k. I’m open to suggestions here, too. Of course, wife is pretty dead set that it needs to be AWD and have airbags. I would have loved to find a civic hatch - but the good ones were all pre-airbag. I found a really nice 1995 Land Cruiser (yeah - a bit of a different platform) with low miles for really nice $$$ - but was immediately vetoed. No airbags. Doh! So- Watching the ads pretty closely. Good bargains wont last long when they appear! |

Mazda 3 and Honda Fit would be good choices, and sporty enough, or can be. I wouldn't touch a $5k Mk 6 GTI because you'll probably hate maintenance, or he will. A Golf with a 2.5 or 2.0 should be fine. Vibe GT and Matrix XRS not really sporty but have a nice motor.

These fold up like a wet taco when hit from the side though. I would not want a new driver in one.

Guys.
Come on. A well set-up 944 is the obvious answer.

I saw an ad on a 2008 A3 SLine in Austin FS a few weeks ago at $3900. It was sold pretty quickly, as in before I could get a call in
My daughter is in a Mazda 3 4 door, with 150k miles. Nice car that I'm sure could go another 150k. But the missus wants her out of it here in Texas bc of all the gigantic pick up trucks and Suburbans on the roads.

I agree with this, but with the caveat that you find one with a manual transmission. The dual clutch autos in these have a horrible reputation for reliability which Ford was sued for. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

![]() The only drawback is that it doesn't look sporty. (which may be good) That said...I would never buy one with an auto tranny.
