My Shelter In Place project

Since I needed to hang out at home I decided to reconfigure a garden shed in my backyard.
I started by having two posts set in concrete that would define the north wall. Next I took the siding off the old shed as I was going to reuse the old shed framework.
Next I used the old framework along with some new steel to build the new shed.
My goal was to reuse as much material as possible from the various things I’ve been dragging along with me as I have moved over the years. So yes it was therapy too.

This is the shed I started with.

Next I started to de-skin the framework which I was planning on reusing.

Concrete work.

Next I hired some guys to pour a concrete floor.

New framing

Next I used the old framing and some new steel to frame the new shed

Once the framing was up I started to hang the new used siding.
I wanted the old barn look.

Great stuff. Love that part of the world.

More siding and framing

I was going to leave the right end of the concrete open as a parking stall but decided to enclose it too.

Next I started putting the roof on.

Here is the finished roof

Hinged door

The far right bay is going to be what I call a dirty fab bay, grinding, sanding, welding, cabinet blast area.
It was going to get a hinged door.

Main sliding door

The main work area I wanted to be open for space and ventilation but I wanted to be able to close it up so I started to make a sliding door using some barn door hardware from my last house.

After the door framework was hung I added siding. More used steel.

Both doors done

Here both doors have their siding attached.
And I started to put siding on the left or east wall.

The east wall is getting a roll up panel garage door. Because of the shed roof I needed to use low overhead rails. Here I’ve started to hang the rails for the door.

What’s left?

I’m still hanging the roll up door rails and I started to extend the slider door rails so I can open that door up completely.

Nice! Now you've got a shelter in place.

Talk about mission creep. ;)

Super cool, I love when people are crafty and resourceful, re using what they already have , Looks great .

Too much ambition for me, you should apply and go on Naked and Afraid for this type of ****.

That's a super cool build. And it totally fits the Central Coast vibe!

fanaudical 06-02-2021 06:32 PM

Great idea to have the whole side slide open like that!

Bill Douglas 06-02-2021 07:25 PM

I love it. Absolutely love it.

Great engineering going on there too.

Killer project. I couldn’t stop thinking about some awesome Zins I had from your neighborhood. Sort of lost my focus.

Be well!

Everyone around this place (New Zealand) seems to build everything out of wood. Why build things out of wood when you can build them out of steel.

I really like the "patina" metal siding, and the slider door. It looks like a much more usable, and functional space than the previous big box store shed.

Here was my Covid project greenhouse...I built it exactly the same as the instructions, except for adding 4' in length. My wife currently has it filled with growing plants, and mood lighting.
