When you don't check your tenant's references...

Wednesday afternoon we see a collection of Edmonton City Police congregating behind a house a few houses away in the back lane. A swat team arrives with a truck and a big loudspeaker. The whole block is blocked off by police. A while later on the loudspeaker an announcement is made. Paul come out with your hands up and hands empty of anything. A short while later a couple of loud bangs which sounded like stun grenades.

What my wife found out from neighbors. The bailiff went to the house to give an eviction order as he had not paid any rent. The perp took a shot at the bailiff and then the police were called. Apparently he then committed suicide later.

And who gets to pay for the swat team?

We flew from Toronto to Edmonton a few years back...just to explore the huge Edmonton Mall.
I was really impressed as to how friendly a place it was...of course all places have their bad spots.

The Mall is gigantic. Indoor NHL rink...indoor beach with slides...casino....anything a person would want.

If I remember right...it's the largest mall in north America.

Was the largest.

Nothing happens in Canada (compare to the US). Edmonton is such nice city, and safe too.

My question is, who pays for the clean up?

I'm sure the deposit is forfeited.

I can remember watching the 10 o'clock news one niight before bed, and seeing a story about a shooting in the North Side, After the commercial break, they are showing the scene and it looks oddly familiar .
At first, I go to my wife, "hey, that is Vincenton street", then I realized, fk, that is our house .
Drive by shooting, a 14 year old kid was shot right on our front porch,
He was not our tenant, but friends with our tenants son, Thankfully, he only suffered minor injuries, but there was a bullet hole in our front door
We are in the process of evicting a female tenant right now, and I have this really bad feeling that it is not going to go smooth .

Who was the bailiff? I have a crappy tenant in Edmonton that I would like gone.

Well here is an update for you. My wife who should have been an investigative reporter talked to some neighbors. The police at the time of the incident kept the tv crews away from the area. There is still nothing in the news about the incident three days later.

According to my wife neighbors either side of the perp who lived in the basement said his sister lived in the main floor. She moved out for whatever reason and that left him alone. Apparently he was a middle aged friendly man and would clear snow for the neighbors. So living alone he could not cope. Taking a shot at the bailiff was a big mistake and he called the police. The rest is history.

Do you guys have any kind of hold on evictions currently ?

And also pay for the bodily fluid removal house cleaning team ?

recycled sixtie 06-05-2021 04:38 AM

There are mostly seniors living in our area. Homicide rate has doubled in the last year in Edmonton. The police are out in force for anything of this nature and I don't blame them because occasionally a one or two police challenge to a perp has ended up badly for the police involved.

In this incident the swat team set up in two houses opposite where the gunman was. The owners of the houses were all elderly. The perp was completely surrounded. I have total respect for Edmonton City Police.

A retired nurse did see the clean up crew going into the house the next day. As for who pays? I find that a strange question. I would think the City as they pay for the wages of the police.

As regards the landlord we will see if she continues to rent out or sells the house.

UB I can talk from experience with helping my daughter evict some tenants. Actually I think they were leaving anyway. She has a very nice condo in downtown Edmonton. About two years ago it was rented out to a husband and wife team who owned a local coffee shop. They decided they needed a new coffee maker and could not pay the rent because of that.

We decided to meet with them as they were moving out and not paying the rent. I let my daughter do all the talking and I stood behind her in case things got out of hand.
An agreement was made such that as two months rent was owing my daughter kept the damage deposit(there was no damage fortunately) and she agreed to let them off the one month rent owing.

My daughter went home and bawled her eyes out. Her husband at the time would not help her settle the dispute. I am extremely proud of the way my daughter handled the situation.

My house (located in Ottewell) has damage. I spoke with a lawyer friend and his advise was to consider the damages part of the cost of doing business. This guy has been in that house some January of 08. He pays his rent most of the time and is mostly caught up. He has done some damage but ‘whatever’.

I’d like to sell the place.

It seems like houses are selling readily in the Edmonton area. I don't know about Ottewell as I am not familiar with that area. Rented to the same tenant since 08 is a long time. How much damage he has done would for me dictate how I handled it if I were in your shoes. Also how much rent he has missed paying.

LWJ 06-05-2021 06:12 AM

Tragic.

Is there ANY situation that could place you in a similar predicament?

If you say “no” you are not being honest with yourself.

Granted, that guy made choices we don’t make. And, hopefully will never make.

But, dig deep and see that there is a victim here.

Suicide sucks.

The SWAT is on salary. They can be idle or in action, the cost is basically the same less bullets and gas. The HAZMAT team would likely be contractors on retainer.

Seem like a couple of silly questions given a man's death.

As soon as I read his sister left, it changed everything as to my perception of the why.

Too many scenarios to guess but comfort in he missed the bailiff and his end was swift.
