Big Boat Screw Ups

I've got a buddy near me that is a big boat diesel mechanic. Mike at www.swissdeisel.com. He specializes in repairing Sulzer engines. These are BIG boy engines that make 50,000 + HP and power ocean-going container and cargo ships. I've told him when I retire I want to assist him on some of these monsters, even if that amounts to handing him a 6 foot long wrench. LOL. Anyway since the Golden Ray salvage has its own thread now, I figured it might be fun to start a thread on other big boat screw-ups. For the older guys here, we're talking Exxon Valdez and the more recent Ever Given blocking the Suez canal.

Here's on ongoing event right now off the coast of Norway. A cargo ship carrying other smaller ships is adrift in 50 ft seas and the last of the crew has abandoned her.

The first video is some cool Norwegian Coast Guard shots. In the final few seconds where a crewman jumps in, note what is NOT still on the boat.

What is not still on the boat at the end? and why did he jump in instead of being rescued off the deck like the others, or taking the lifeboat thingy?

What caused her to flounder? She appears under power, is the list from flooding?
If I am not mistaken, what is missing is a big boat from midship.

Yeah, why not take the life boat off the starboard stern? Does the list make it impossible to launch?

Or, just hop into one of those other boats on deck, and when the big ship goes over, just bob to the surface like a cork and float away.

Some of the OTHER boats. I guess there is a chance they cut them loose in an effort to help right the ship. Regardless of how it happened, it doesn't appear that it helped much and the ship is now abandoned. It is clearer here in this video.

Not sure why they didn't use the lifeboat. My guess is that because the Coast Guard was already there with a swimmer and maybe they figured going directly into the drink was safer.

As someone with a severe water phobia, that video makes me a little sick to my stomach. Glad everyone was recovered from the craft.

I'm from Florida and love the water. I certainly have no fear of it, but its power can be awesome. I can't imagine being on the open ocean in a big ship that's being tossed around like a toy.

I would have thought that would be one of those instances where they get a harbor master kind of guy to essentially valet park the boat. You'd think that sort of accident would be almost impossible. And it probably is, but for every complex system with a slew of checks and balances, there's a perfect storm of issues that can occur like a giant Rube Goldberg machine to cause these sort of accidents.

We need Yellowperil to chime in. Even if he's never had anything pop up in his little slice of water, I'm sure he's got some interesting stories. I remember him posting the one about the hatch covers, and some of his photos.

Not quite as exciting as the footage of the boat in the first post, but this is a pretty big boat screw-up.

I might need a "Smit Salvage" t-shirt.
