How will you downsize?
Stephanie's thread got me thinking about unloading some of life's accumulation of "stuff."
How will you downsize? What are your plans? Do you have plans? I've been selling off or giving away the small stuff - all my vinyl records, my photo studio equipment, dozens of model trucks and tractors, books, my tire ashtray collection, misc junk, and parts for future projects that will never come to fruition. I gave up on ever riding my road bike again and sold it last week for a nice price - another turn of the downward spiral of life. The big items are my vehicles. First to go is a tossup between my truck and my 911. The truck is fun to drive if I'm not going anywhere. I don't see it appreciating (who the hell would want this thing but me?). Restoring it was a labor of love and I will take a huge bath on it no matter how much I can sell it for. The 911 is a commodity, so I need to watch the market. Nice car. Fun. I may get back into DEs with it, so I'll keep it until I give up that dream along with riding a road bike any appreciable distance - another turn of that downward spiral. The 356s will be tough. After over 40 years it's hard to contemplate being without them. I've taken both of them down to the last nut and bolt and brought them back. Selling either of them will be hard, very hard. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1623027838.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1623027838.jpg |
I'll give you $1000 for that Speedster.
I wish you would stop thinking this is a downward spiral. For me, it is a mere simplification. Removing clutter from my life. We spend our lives accumulating things, thinking the more stuff we have the happier we will be. The opposite is much more true. I was never happier than when my stuff fit on my motorcycle. I am returning toward that. |
Ain't no reason to... until you can't keep up
|
I am planning on selling you guys a bunch of my crap!
|
For me these days...less really is more..
That being said... I'm keeping the Speedster. PERIOD Mrs WD can decide what to do with it at some point :) |
Putting it in cold water seems to shrink it up real good.
|
I'm buying a commercial unit and moving all of my stuff, the good the bad and the ugly, there. So I don't really need to downsize.

I really like the Red 356!

P-cars all gone. No regerts. Still have some parts and tools to get rid of. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/off-topic-discussions/1071667-soon-porscheless.html
Work winding down. Last new home closes tomorrow. Sold the vacation home. Packing right now, closing this week. 'back home' moved to a 30% smaller home. Downsizing Aggressively. Quote:

I’m still upsizing.

Why does “downsizing” require you to get rid of your perfectly restored cars? If they needed restoration or were deteriorating before your eyes I could see why you’d want to get rid of them to simplify your life. But think about it, what effort or angst does having your truck, your 911, your speedster sit quietly under a tarp in your barn where you can look at them any time you want and take them for an ice cream cone run when the mood strikes and the weather is good? Is your lifestyle going to change depending on whether you have the money from the sale of your vehicles? I suspect not. Does it cost much to keep them safe in storage? Probably not. So why do you want to get rid of them? Some people consider vehicles to be the ultimate in pop art sculptures. Lots of people pay a lot more for less attractive sculpture and claim that they derive pleasure from having it in their possession to view. You could do worse than consider your vehicles as sculpture to be admired.
If you really do just want to divest yourself of any of those beautiful pieces of moving art because you don’t want the responsibility of keeping them, please consider the MRM ranch as a happy safe space for any vehicle you don’t want anymore. |

you old farts are so depressing.

I'm on a roller coaster: From a high of 22 motorcycles, I said if I got down to 9,I'd buy a 10th as last big, fast toy and never have more than 10. That was 3 years ago. Now at 13....
Plus 4 John Deere, 4 snowmobiles, 2 911 Targa and the 1960 190SL... I'm a Collector, Not a Hoarder. |

Hopefully I dont have to move again anytime soon. Moving the mill, lathe and other machine tools is a serious pain. I was lucky to find a place with a music studio in the basement and a backyard shop..
I got rid of the RV, 911SC and various engine blocks I had. I also scaled down all my music gear to one half stack and my best friend's drumset. |
