Speculating.....could have happened at the place of business before he left. Cops called and alerted he was drunk and driving, as well as the battery. Boom.

I hope it helps him/them somehow.

I don't think they are "bad" people. They lost a daughter a few years back - I dunno - maybe that triggered something - or accelerated what was already there.

Hopefully his license will be revoked for a while. We'll see......

Exactly, that was why I asked, "battery on an elderly person" seems like a weird charge.

Even if his license is revoked, there's a big chance that he'll keep on driving. A lot of folks do.

It's probably only a matter of time. Some of the vehicles that perform braking when backing up or braking when using cruise control probably have some of the gear sitting there already.

Guys - I didn't want to reveal this because it might sound like I'm bragging but I have the highest rating possible for peripheral vision, according to my optometrist. No kidding. I can keep my head in a straight ahead position and see both ways left and right. But beyond that......there is no reason to bring my vehicle to a complete stop - instead of the 1 MPH creep you are seeing - when there are no other vehicles at the intersection.

Most normal people have excellent peripheral vision. One of these days, you will meet another gargoyle at some 4-way stop and it will be a "cute meet" of two morons in the middle of the road. If you lived in a normal state, you'd have a lot of points on your license...time to buy a bus pass. :)

Also, is there someone else in your vehicle or are you talking to yourself?

Baz,
Your explanation reminds me of the story about the young fellow who was pulled over by a police officer who informed him he had not stopped at the intersection he had just come through.
The young fellow explained he had slowed down and insisted that was all that was necessary. It was at that point the officer pulled out his nightstick and proceeded to hit the fellow around the neck and shoulders and asked whether he would prefer if the beating were slowed down or stopped.
Not exactly the letter of the law.
Having said that, I think you would be hard pressed to find a driver who obeys every law at all times. In my case, although I tend to stop and look twice at intersections. I tend to treat speed limit signs on the open roads as more of an advisory. Mea culpa.

Question
At an intersection with a stop sign, you should stop and:
Answers
A. Check your rearview mirror for cars tailgating.
B. Move when the vehicle ahead of you moves.
C. Look right first, then left, then right again.
D. Look left first, then right, then left again.
Explanation
When stopped at an intersection, you should first look to your left, as vehicles coming from the left are closer to you than vehicles coming from the right. Look to your right, then look to your left again, in case there are any vehicles coming from that direction that you did not see at first glance.

Hmm, I stop, check every direction, then before I move I look right, left, right and then go. Left side may be closer, but it's also much more easily visible when looking out the window. Right side, across the car and out the window seems more likely to have cars hiding (behind pillars, headrests, whatever). That assumes the same/good visibility in each direction. There are times when one side or the other has a curve or tree or some feature that makes that side more difficult to see at a distance, in that case, that direction is going to get the last look.

ROFLMAO! Yes, I believe you do. :D

Baz 08-03-2021 11:12 AM

Only minions feel the need to come to a complete stop at a stop sign, when there is no other traffic present.

I see them every day.

I'm resigned to share the road with them.

They are everywhere.

Funny thing I've noticed...these same people will pull out in front of traffic when they really didn't have room to do so.

But so help me God....they did come to a complete stop at that stop sign! Gotta give 'em that!

True fact....

Every driver on the road...thinks they are the best driver on the road. :D

Know it all's...in general. Lot of them show up on talk forums.....

Especially Porsche owners...for some reason......

I'm with Baz on this one. Stop signs are for tourists.

Welcome to "The Independent Thinkers Club"! :D

My argument for running stop signs on my bicycle is that: 1. I have much better peripheral vision than a car and 2. my kinetic energy at 15 mph is about the same as a car rolling a stop sign at 3 mph which almost every car does in a neighborhood without traffic

stevej37 08-04-2021 06:38 AM

With the multiple air bags/side curtains in todays vehicles, the A pillar is about twice the size of before.

My 98 Prelude (with only steering wheel air bag) has the thinnest pillars I've seen.
My 10 Fit A pillars are big enough to hide another car at a corner.

Then you're an idiot. Is your peripheral vision good enough to see a motorcycle cop hiding behind some hedges in a driveway, waiting for an idiot to roll the stop sign?

A California roll ticket is exactly the same as going 40 mph through the stop sign. It's, "failure to stop." If nothing else, it's an extremely expensive ticket when you factor-in the increased insurance premium for 3 years in CA., other states may have different time limits for how long a ticket stays on your record.

The best advice is to drive as though a cop is behind you. It doesn't mean that you have to drive like a twat, going 10 under the limit all the time. They don't give a schit about that. It means that you drive like a professional driver, like a lady or gentlemen at all times. And that means stopping at all stop signs, giving pedestrians the right-of-way always, letting people into traffic, etc.

I'll post a video of me driving in the city some time and I guarantee that I get around faster than you, stopping for every stop sign. I drive briskly at times but with quite a bit more skill. :)

Guilty. But I stop at red lights and stop signs. Kooky, I know...
