A man whose wife does all the driving
I know this heterosexual couple. The husband almost never drives. When he does volunteer to take over the driving, he does so half-heartedly that his wife frustratingly declines the offer. I don’t get it. He’s a very successful upper level, take charge manager at work but behind the wheel, he’s very timid. Seems like a disconnect.

My husband drives 40-60K miles a year for work. If we go anywhere, I drive. Sometimes if I'm not doing anything I drive him to his appointments, sometimes 2 hrs away. He sits in the passenger seat completing work that would otherwise be done once he got home. Plus, we get to talk and spend time together in the process. Maybe she likes driving, as I do.

I mentioned a friend of mine who was a poor driver in another thread. His wife used to drive them when they went anywhere together. I think it was self-preservation.

This is something I see all the time on discussion forums. People assume that what is normal for them is (or should be) normal for others. The guy doesn't like to drive, that should be enough and is nobody else's business.

I'm not sure why anyone would care, or even have the notion that 'the man should drive'.

Big deal. Momma likes to drive. Daddy doesn't.

My wife doesn't like to drive. When we are together or I am available, I drive. I'm happy to drive her to appts if I'm available to do so.
My daughter and son in law both drive a fair amount. I don't think my son likes to drive and isn't very good at it, so his wife drives if they are both going somewhere. But he does drive when he needs to.

Looks like he took charge and doled up the duty to the wife.

I know a guy who often cooks dinner for his wife and kids! And even washes the dishes afterwards! What a tool!
There's another so called 'man' down the street that took his car in for an oil change. Seriously? Letting your wife drive is a problem? I drive enough in town to mostly hate being in traffic and I'd love to be chauffeured around everywhere I went - it'd make me feel like a king.

I usually drive when my wife and I go anywhere together, sometimes she will drive and she's a good driver but I am not a good passenger. Once when we were starting out on a trip to the beach with the kids, we had to stop and wait for another family as we were were all traveling/vacationing together. My wife was driving and while waiting I was bored sitting over there in the passenger seat and was opening the glove box and going through things. I then insisted that I drive even though I was tired from working the night before, I needed something to do and focus on. Lol.

Growing up there was a family up the street that would go places with Dad in the back seat. Never saw him drive.
Turns out he'd gotten a DUI and was relegated to the back seat or their car insurance was void.

Let me clarify. The man’s wife would rather he do the driving so there’s always friction there.

I don’t know how long they’ve been married but sometime you just need to let it go and not allow the friction in the equation. He is who he is. He’s not going to change

We switch off all the time on longer/ish trips depending on meetings, conference calls, etc.
Last time we drove back from South Carolina, she had the computer out and ran an important meeting for over two hours while I navigated I-95: Pedro Says, Chili Today, Hot Tamale!

Last Friday, one of my employees comes back to the shop and told me that a lady is on the phone. She is calling from the side of the freeway on their way to Yosemity Nat'l Park and they ran out of gas. I speak to her, and it turns out her husband is there. He gives me a bit more clear directions to find them and I tell them I'm going to fill up a 5 gallon gas can and head out. I find them about 7 miles away and start to fill their tank. The wife was in a bit of a panic, and had called a tow truck too (wtf!?). The husband was NOT driving. He was basically letting the wife drive and call for help. I feel that had he been a bit more of a take charge kind of dude, maybe he'd have checked out the car before they left, and would have certainly called for help. As it turns out, the wife called the only gas station that would have gone out of their way to get them going. The husband tried to give me $50. I told him that he could pay me back by getting to his destination and home safely, and help someone else who really needs it. I got in the trucka and headed back to the office. I should add also that the husband told their adorable two children to roll down the window and thank the "nice man" LOL. I felt really great that they got going again safely.
