Tom Gallager: He works in IT with me. Small world. :)

Wow it is a small world.

Ever see any of his restored 1932 Fords?

Nope, not yet...

Brian, now you've got me drooling! That makes me want to go out and find another E28...

Mine didn't have those Recaros though. If I ever bought another one, it'd be the M535i version. I liked the understated (undercover) looks of the normal version, but the M does it.

I like that Bimmer wheel. It looks a lot like the 930S wheel that every Porsche owner in the world wants, but just a little bigger (I am assuming)... nice cockpit. I was always a fan of BMW, but it looks like they are falling down my list very quickly with their new designs.

Those old E28s were very cool. They even had a circuit breaker for the power windows mounted under the steering wheel for when the windows punked-out due to overload.

My friends said that the rear power windows I had in that car were units John Woo would have been proud of. ;)

But I loved that car.

styling? I can take a ***** in the toilet and the curvature of the log I dropped would be styled better than that gawdawful dump of a car the new 7-series is. On a lighter note, there is a car near me that is very similar to the one SoCal911SC owns and its got E46 M3 wheels (17" replicas) a front diffuser, tinted windows and the purple/blue/red M colored decals going down the side.......I need a new daily driver that will last me the next five years and I'm thinking of leaving a note on the guys car. Anything I should look out for? Are these cars reliable and do they last if properly maintained? Can I do most of the work on it myself or is there a lot of stuff I will have to take to a specialist? (on a side note, I do all the work to my '83 911SC)

They are reliable and very easy to maintain.

The engines seem to go forever. Lots of high mileage ones around.

Simple DME injection and easy to get to things (much easier than a 911).

Some known problems, though:

Automatic transmissions can be unreliable, particularly in the 84-86 models.

Front end shimmy, which requires replacement of the control arms (not too expensive and pretty easy to do).

Front rotors seem to warp after a while, cheap and easy.

Some other little things, but nothing really major $$$ or major difficulty.

Re: rotor warpage, I've read that rotors never really warp, they just get hot and brakepad material gets sintered onto them when the brakes are held down at a stop.

Any thoughts on this? I've made it a point to NOT keep my foot on the brakes when they may be hot and the car is not moving...no problems yet. ;)

Now, now, I'm not taking the credit OR the blame for this theory. ;)

I'll see if I can hunt down a link to the article that I read about this.
