California gets 2022 911 GT3 with PDK ONLY! No manual...
Did any of you happen to catch the press release this week (Tuesday) of the 2022 911 GT3 Touring? Well, if you did (or didn't) did you see this wonderful quote at the end of it?
Quote:
"The seven-speed PDK gearbox will be the only transmission offered in California with the 911 GT3."
|
And that's not just for the Touring, all GT3s are affected. Why you might ask? Well... an outdated sound regulation!
Quote:
We have to fully accept and respect national and local guidelines in every market -- not just in the US but around the world. Unfortunately, this precludes a manual gearbox option on the 911 GT3 in the state of California because of a sound regulation that is in the process of being updated. We had anticipated an updated regulation at the time of launch, but this process is not yet complete.

Thanks to an outdated California Code of Regulations testing procedure called SAE J1470, for those that are interested in looking it up, dates back to '92 when cars only had 4/5 gears. So where's the update? Well, it has been updated to SAE J2805 on 5/20. However, CHP has yet to update it and Porsche is waiting on the claim.
Quote:
Porsche says this outdated California testing method does not affect the six- or seven-speed manual gearboxes used in the 718 Boxster, 718 Cayman or the rest of the 911 range. The automaker assures me, "The manual is alive and well."
