Hold on Credit card. WTF?

This isn't the first time. Its my business card. I bought about 1600 bucks of tile stuff at the tile shop this morning. Go back in the afternoon to spend another 500 on thinset only to find my card declined. I just call my bank because there's no wait time and everyone is asleep late in the evening. Its pissing me off because it is chipping into my only Pelican time. :D I got through and the BS from them is fighting fraud. I question them about buying things for my business at the same store twice triggers fraud? That manager can't give me an answer. I am  What the fook does buying from the same store twice trigger a warning for these people? It happened about 5 weeks ago. Same thing, bought lumber, went back the next day, the card was declined. I am beyond pissed.

Another time was my personal card. It stop me from buying gas in Edmonton. Thankfully, I had another card with me or else I would have been stuck there. Its not like they don't know, because I used the same card at the airport rental car company. Any of you experience this?

Yes, generally random and unpredictable

I only carry one credit card and one debit card.

They call before they put anything on hold...unfortunately last week the debit card was scammed but they called first to verify the charges, which were not mine.

New card went out that day.

I filled my diesel can and put it on the card. Went to put gas in my truck and the card was declined. They told me you can’t do two transactions in a row at the same place.

I have one personal credit card, and one for my business. Both with USAA.

We had to send letters and make a few phone calls to get them to understand that it is NOT fraud when we leave a local airport and take on $175.00 in gas, fly to Nebraska and do a project, land and get $400 in fuel and then put in $200 when we get to Kansas, and then more fuel at our home airport. All in one day.

They finally understood our airplane can suck up a lot of gas and if we are buying gas at an airport, it is legit.

The funniest thing to me, is in my duties as treasurer for the local PCA region I am the one that pays the bills at restaurants for the Christmas party or other events. One event the guy running it lost control, and we ended up with a $800 bill at a pizza joint. That went right through no problem. I guess they figure I really really like pizza. Our Christmas party was at Devon Tower on the 50th floor and very high end. Every couple had paid for the meal with a check to the club. I then paid the bill at the restaurant, and then paid the cc bill with a club check. That dinner bill was $2,400 and no sweat, right through.

Your convenience finishes a distant 3rd (likely more) to credit card companies' obligation to pay for illegitimate charges.

Weird, I'm not sure what algorithm most banks use for fraud detection, but some are better than others. My bank (credit union) is generally fantastic. I've had a couple of cases where I charged something and it was approved, but they texted me to confirm that it was me making the purchase. Usually when they block something, it's a real issue.

Never had that problem with any of my cards.

I use 2 Discover cards.

2 Chase.

1 Citi.

And 1 AT&T.

I use the Discover cards mostly. Linked to my PP and Amazon.

The others I rotate just to keep from being cancelled.

Any monthly balance is always paid off each month so no interest paid.

835 FICO.

I tend to use cash for most of my in person transactions though.

I write two checks per year. Property tax and vehicle registration. Both done through mail.

NO debit card. Taboo! ;)

Almost all unattended card transactions are subject to a decline when used multiple times in succession for either the same product or at the same location.

Online transactions generally will decline if a duplicate transaction was attempted within a 15 minute window.

It’s partially fraud mitigation and a hedge against user error, consumer for some reason believes the transaction may not have completed and retries.

Yeah it can be annoying as hell but beats the alternative that fraud is actually being attempted.

Gas is one of the places you see a lot of declines because of the temp hold.

Smart station owners will cap the max dollar amount per transaction to keep the temp hold amount low and not risk banging up against a customers credit limit.

It’s logical for gas stations to place a fixed amount hold against a card because there is no way for them to know what the final amount will be and if the card will cover it because you can’t really get the product back after it’s dispensed.

I had a card declined when I tried to buy a camera on-line.
Ended up costing me $300 more to get the camera as I missed out on the deal that was for a short time only. Talk about being pissed off.

Never had this but I can't seem to use my Chase Visa twice on the same day for gas at Shell, even at different stations. Maybe gas stations are a notorious for fraud, because a lot of them still don't have chip readers.

About 12 years ago I had my visa card declined because I was buying about $1200 worth of camera equipment. They called within a few minutes to see if it was me actually buying the equipment. Once that was cleared up the transaction went through.

I bought $2400 worth of car parts online the other day with my AMEX and it breezed right through, no problem.

It might be annoying or a little embarrassing, but potentially save yourself a lot of hassle and money.

Every once in a while, I get an email saying a new card is being sent. I assume it’s because my card has been compromised in someway. I never see any charges I didn’t make though

You're dealing with a big bank. These cases are on a need to know basis, the phone bank, no pun intended, folks won't know a thing or be able to help you. Try contacting the fraud department directly. The automatic system flagged your card possibly because someone else tried using it fraudulently without your knowledge. Anyone who has your card info can do so.

Yes, honeypots for skimmers

rockfan4 06-19-2021 12:00 PM

I hope they don't start doing this at hardware stores. Every project seems to take a minimum of three trips.

Scott Douglas 06-19-2021 12:23 PM

That is what scares me about my HD card.
You can go thru self checkout and no one is going to question a thing.

And yes, I'd rather miss a deal than have someone using my card without me knowing it. We had that happen a number of years ago and they racked up @$1200 in charges real quick. We caught it on our monthly statement.
