DuckDuckGo?
I use it. It’s free. They claim they don’t share your browsing history. But they run ads touting their product, so they must be selling something. If it’s ads it’s pretty subtle, because I don’t notice them. What’s their angle?

using it right now. i like it
|
They make their money the same way as every other search engine you've ever heard of: ads.

Dunno - But using Duck Duck along with my Brave Browser has cut way back on my malware issues..
|
We use it too and have switched over to proton mail and eliminated Gmail altogether.
|
Use tor and tails.

My DDG results have been exactly like Bing results.
Word for word exactly. IMO basically they act as a proxy and keep all the user data for themselves. (btw....Where did the front page disclaimer"We don't track you" go?) Bing is incredibly awful and staggeringly stupid at times, but still better than most of the other indys I've tried. |
I never heard of it but just switched it for my search engine. Very easy and so far I like it! Thanks, Patrick!

You can turn off a lot of ad's, and they still are less pushy than booble. Depending on settings you will have your "speed-dial" favorites suddenly having a travel site saved, for example, after searching Tahiti overwater bungalows. |
I use it from time to time but google seems to work better for some things. Tried bing in the past and hated it. I normally use linux and have never gotten a virus so that is no concern.
|
I just tried it. Typed in "Camera monopod." Sure enough, ads that are so non-intrusive they don't look like ads popped up. I've never noticed them before.
|
And they don’t seem to filter search results with the same bias that Google does.
|
I use it on my home Mac and my mobile.
Like. |
I use FireFox with DDG as my search function, have for years based on a friend's recommendation.
My personal email is now Zoho. All on MacBook Pro. I am frankly not computer literate enough to know how effective those measures are, I just follow that advice and the advice of others here that know their stuff. |

I use Duck Duck go as my search engine with Firefox as as my browser. I like it, but if I am doing a difficult search I will use Google to get more results. That is rare however.
I use our own domain so my email matches our web page. I still have several functioning email addresses with my cable provider. They just forward it all to my company email. I am instantly skeptical when a business contacts me and they have a Hotmail or Yahoo or AOL email as the provider. Since I am the owner of the company I use my email for business and personal email. It has a good anti-spam feature, and I use Outlook to sort my email. |
DuckDuckGo makes money in two simple ways: Advertising and Affiliate Marketing. Advertising is shown based on the keywords typed into the search box. Affiliate revenues come from Amazon and eBay affiliate programs. When users buy after getting on those sites through DuckDuckGo the company collects a small commission.

Switched a good while back when google started getting wacky.
|
Duckduckgo sux for finding car info. Have to use Google for that.
You all need a good ad blocker. AdGuard is your friend. PS quit using gmail. That's a spam portal. rjp |
I started using the Dissenter Browser based on Brave. Been using it about 5 months now. Ad and tracker blocking built in, if selecting a private browser, have the option for TOR. Easy to download and to import bookmarks.

Deleted.

What ever happened to Patrick? He hasn't been around for some time.

Kept trying to have OT as a place to make political putdowns but without reply.
Not sure when exactly, but I know when I came back in 2021 from taking 2020 off I'd had enough and decided to reply to PARF topics wherever someone brought them up, the convo could always be moved. Seems others had the same idea. He got agro that his PARF posts in OT were getting replied to by those that disagreed. Considered it toxic that people would have other views on the people and subjects he brought up. So he left the toxicity. All he had to do was stop making creating PARF comments in OT... He was his own toxin. |

I see the difference. His posts this year have all been on the 911 tech board, and most of the posts from last year were on the parts for sale board. |
Am i the only one that uses a host file?
https://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.htm It seems to block all the ads |
I use it with the Onion browser, it’s like I don’t exist on the internet 😀

just kidding. I have "Pi-hole" rather than a hostfile. |
I tried DDG for a while. Some searches were OK, and some sucked. I went back to google. I also have google configured to not track me which I'm sure does something.

It says my browser is conveying 17.72 bits of information and is uniquely identifiable among 215,355 systems tested in the last 45 days. I use Firefox with an ad blocker and various privacy settings enabled. |
Funny this just came back up. Just last week DDG shot themselves in the foot and lost a ton of users. They started suppressing some results based on their version of “misinformation”, which is not what the DDG user base was interested in.

This one works without Java. https://amiunique.org/ " Only 4 browsers out of the 425255 observed browsers fingerprints in our entire dataset (<0.01 %) have exactly the same fingerprint as yours." |
