New guy in the 'hood
A place about a mile from here sold about 6 months ago. There have been two big MERSK shipping containers in the front yard since the time of the sale. Seemed like a strange place to keep shipping containers. Through the local gossip grapevine we got the story, and it's weird.
The family that sold the house was building a new one, but it wasn't ready by the time the new buyer wanted to move in. They made some deal where the seller would put all their stuff in two shipping containers parked in the front yard and get them within a month. Something happened, it took longer than a month, and now the guy who bought the house won't let the previous owner on the property to retrieve the containers. The scuttlebutt is that he's really piss about them being there too long and by some logic he's making it so they'll stay there even longer. I don't know if he's holding out for some money or what. It just seems strange. If I had two big MERSK shipping containers in my front yard I'd want them out of there ASAP no matter how pissed off I was.

Is it even legal to store them in a residential area? I'm guessing not.
I had a similar issue where a contractor left a dumpster in my driveway, he was responsible for removal but wouldn't pay. Dumpster owner wouldn't move it for me unless I agreed to pay the contractors entire bill, which included several other projects he had on the go. Mr. Dumpster changed his tune when I told him I was going to have another company empty the dumpster and leave it at his house.

Probably depends on the communications between the 2 parties.
The containers were a compromise that benefitted both parties. One side gets to move in sooner and the other side has available storage. Let em get their two containers and both sides will then be happy. As it is, neither side is happy. |

If there is one overarching thing I have learned from being on this forum, it's that Americans are really weird. The stories from the heartland I read here have made me almost scratch through my head and let's not even talk about PARF.
Why on earth wouldn't the sellers store their stuff somewhere else, like not on the front lawn of the house they no longer own? Maybe a Public Storage facility, where it won't get moldy on a lawn where it probably rains like in the Bible? ![]() And now two of these dumb scrotes have found each other. Beautiful.

I had a similar request when my mother-in-law sold her home. The buyer wanted to drop a container in the driveway one week prior to closing.
We declined, mainly because of space, and they found an alternate drop location. People look for free solutions first.

Real Estate deals are crazy right now. People will do anything to jump to the head of the line, many concessions being made.
My Wife had this posted on her FB page. i think it's a good parody of today's market...

The good news-
You already have a taste of what the new neighbors are like. Probably best to keep them at arms length. Cordial, but distant. |

Or bake them a pie. Maybe they’re crying out for help and only need someone compassionate to understand their story and help soothe their anxiety.
Upbringing dontchaknow.

I’ll probably never even meet them, there are a lot of cornfields between our place and there. I probably would never have heard about it except my immediate neighbor is the neighborhood gossip, and I wondered why a couple of big ass MERSK shipping containers were clear out here in the sticks.

As mentioned above, whatever is in the containers is going to be worthless when opened.
I had a homeowner who used one of those PODS to store her furniture. They dropped it in her driveway when she moved in and when she opened it up, it looked like one gigantic mold factory. Everything was trashed and she had to buy all new furniture. |

I suspect without the current owners cooperation - those containers now belong to the new homeowner.
THeir best bet is for the company that actually owns the containers to sue for their retreival.... Assuming the old homeowners dont.

A full conex would weigh 20,000# +, so difficult for anything without a large winch, and trailer. |
