If the song was about the drive on I-70 across Kansas from Kansas City to Denver it would be just windmills and wheat in the winter, and just windmills and dirt in the summer. And it would be an 5 hour song at 85 MPH. I guess there some cattle feed lots to add to the olfactory changes. Once you are past east Colorado there are some mountains to see finally. You can drive for 2.5 hours, stop to pee and get some road food, drive for 2.5 hours and stop, and swear you are at the same rest stop as 5 hours before. It is the exact same place.

Truth there. I recall reading a book with thoughts of a German WWII prisoner of war as he was being taken by train across Canada...he wondering why Hitler was so foolish as to pick a fight with people who had such vast natural resources.
