180 bucks a day, no skill, nothing
My concrete contractor and I got talking about hauling trash out and cleaning out my job site. He said no one wants to do this work anymore not even the illegals. They all have jobs and are demanding 180 a day without skills. I was shocked. No skills, 180 a day??? At 5 days a week, that is 43k per year, and no tax. That's a lot of money for none skill bodies.
We need to learn from our history books again to import cheap from elsewhere around the world. 180 bucks. They can kiss my fat ass. I suppose they hear that everything has gone up too in this country. |

20ish a hour.
Not like peasants are in low demand either. Local tree contractor has been paying his band of misfit hs kids and drop outs $17 hour.

Come to think of it. Those laborers aren't even Mexican. 5'3 for the tallest adult. I suspected central/ south America.

Last time was about 15 years ago, I tried to pick up someone at homedepot to haul back fill at my house. I never use them at a client's home because I don't trust them. One of my workman had the flu so I was too lazy and tired to do that work. Wife and I had been taking off concrete forms all day long. It was about 11am and I only really needed him for 3-4 hours and was willing to pay him the for whole day's work. It was about 80 bucks a day. A bunch of them ran up to the truck. My workman spoke spanish and told the one that hopped onto the the back of the truck that we only pay 80 for the rest of the day and the work was about 4 hours. He refused, wanted 100 and lunch. Wouldn't haul anything and had a ton of painting experience. Yeah right. I told him to get the fook off my truck. Ended up hauling the fill with my wife a couple hours a day over the weekend. Dumb of them to think that way. By 11, there's no work for them and he could have pick up 80 bucks instead of nothing. But then again, if they can think like that, they wouldn't be in that situation.

You live in Los Angeles, and you're pissed that human beings want $43k a year to feed their family.

The heck with the day pay. Figure the bid on the job itself and pitch that to them.
"Dig a trench from point "A" to point "B" and I'll give you $200 bucks". Sit back and watch them "Do the Loco-motion" and knock that out in 3-4 hours. Gatorade helps (Pepino-Limon) and lots of water (no Arrowhead, they hate that stuff).

Builders already have too many jobs lined up so they don't really want more work. So they quote ridiculous money to do builds, then after a while this becomes the new norm' and people feel that this is what you have to pay to get a build done. I only know about residential. There are some very good builders here and they tend to have one or two guys who have done their apprentice training and have got their papers on each site. then three of four other guys who are good but are apprentices or pretty good builders but don't have their papers. We don't have a bunch of illegals coming in and "doing the hard work". Everyone is paid well and works to the rules and regulations. On the big commercial buildings in town there are labourers who carry materials and wheel barrow concrete around the place. These guys are often NZ born Samoans who are paid well. For one off type jobs such as section clearing, removing a building or fence, job like that. Rugby clubs like to be called and offered $500 or $1,000 cash. The guys see it as a good workout and cash for the end of year booze up. |

Key word here is illegal. No tax. Our all American boys have to pay a portions of that to fund their medical, lunch programs while they take that money, all of it into their pockets. That college kid that works over at Starbucks are making 15-16 bucks and they have to pay medical insurances, roof over their heads and tax. They have a skill called the ability to communicate with me or anyone else. Drive themselves to a job. These guys have to be picked up and taken to a job by someone. |

The day laborers we get around here are white citizens. They get paid cash, and most of them live with a woman in her section 8 housing with her kids by some other guy or guys so the guys don’t want any record of earnings. Employers don’t have to report under $600 so they move on after a few days.

Contractors are never happy.
So are they too expensive or too cheap? Or are they like drug dealers that get you hooked on the cheap shat then jack the prices once you are addicted? Quote:

I pay my laborer 200 a day . Its a good deal in my mind . He shows up when I ask him to and works all day . He is slow ( mentally ) but an overall like able guy . He has some skills, but you have to hold his hand for some things
I think he gets some ss benefits
