What to do with it? Pour into hole?

Recently brewed grounds around the holes and around the yard. It’s only a deterrent because they don’t like the smell so they may pop up elsewhere. It also fertilizes your yard.

This worked for me, one more than one infestation. Cheap. Just be sure you don't touch the piece of gum as you unwrap it. Wear nitrile gloves. Couple of sticks down one or two holes should do it.
They like the flavor but can't digest the gum so it clogs their inners up and they die. At least that's what I've read.

Good luck! I've battled them ever since we moved in back in '85.

DoubleMint Gum was my very first move - at my wife's suggestion. She said her "friend" told her it would work. Several packs of gum later, no effect.

Re the bark on that tree, first I'd say "Good eye." I'm at work so I can't say for sure, but I think that's a form of pine tree (conifer?) - maybe a Stone Pine. Anyways I think that's how the bark has always looked, but I should have some photos from 2 1/2 years ago that should show if something is going at it.

I don’t think it was very noticeable in the first pics I posted. And when I saw it last night, I thought it was just as a result of the damage from gnawing on it. But upon further inspection, I wonder if there could have been a crack in it when I purchased it, and that the (smell of) the water attracted the monster? See closeup below:

My guess was that the critter gnawed through a spot which then caused the crack.

Its been hot here, don't be so cheap Dave. Give your animals or rats some water to drink instead having to chew their way through the cap just to get a drink. On second thought, some poison will keep this from happening.

Speaking of which, I am dealing with gofer issues at my rental. I am about to blow up the while hill side jsut to kill the one mofo.

A few of the actual gophers we or our cat have dispatched:

This is Max. I don't have a photo of him with gophers, but he's killed quite a few rats since we moved!

My neighbor had rodents chew through the well hose in his crawlspace. Big holes it must have been blasting in its mouth. I burried all i could and wrapped the rest with metal window screen. I think its a rat. A while later he had a leak from his kitchen sink drain. All the cabinets are sealed off. All the traps and pipes were chewed through. Also there were huge holes in the bottom of his dish washer. It came in from the crawlspace but i couldnt figure out how they got in from outside. Sealed it off best i could. Crazy critters

Replace that riser with a iron pipe cap. Whatever it is ain’t likely to chew threw a natal cap. Just get a threaded adapter, screw it on and you are fixed.
