Best BBQ around Kansas City
A friend (fellow pelican) is driving through KC looking for the best BBQ. He said something off the main route. Suggestions?
I am sure he will post his review. Thanks. |

Slaps BBQ off I-70, Arthur Bryant's. Jack Stack at Country Club Plaza. Cannot go wrong with any of these three.

I'll second Jack Stack...can't go wrong, but it is more of the "high-end" BBQ and less of the "off the main route" hole in the wall BBQ

I know nothing about KC or the BBQ there, but interpreted "off the main route" as being near the Interstate. As we all know, the best joints are usually "off the beaten path" holes-in-the-wall.

Different styles in all corners of the US. I've been to KC a few times...never had any BBQ there that stood out. Our area has the type I like. ![]()

I am NOT a BBQ bigot like Steve .... I like 'em all (the different styles that is). But if they Q with gas, they can just kiss my BBQ butts

Arthur Bryant BBQ. Started in 1908. Arthur took over in '46 and moved the restaurant to the current location in '58. And as they say, "the rest is history". Best around. Be sure to take some home. And don't forget the sauce.

It's about 7 1/2 hours off the main route, south on US 63. The place is called Leonard's in Memphis.

Gates BBQ has been around since the 1940s with several locations. At the counter they almost yell “hi, may I help you”. It’s their trademark.

Sorry, I can't comment on the individual locations. Gates, like Arthur Bryant are the two old school KC BBQ places. But another to consider Is Oklahoma Joe’s. It’s in an old gas station. They make smokers now too that you can find in many places. For many years I attended the Big 12 basketball championships in KC. While I was there, I ate bbq for four days straight and tried everything I could. A lot of fun!!

KCMO or KC Kansas?
I say Q39. Yes, it's an overly expensive sit down joint, but the meat there was freaking kick butt.

Does it matter? I'll bet one has the world's best BBQ and the other "ain't fit to eat" .... and vice versa
