Question for the concert goers.
Would you rather know the set list in adance, or be surprised?
|
I actually preferred shows where the band didn't didn't even know the setlist in advance :D. Sometimes even the songs too! Spontaneous and somewhat organic .... if that makes any sense.
|
Don't care. Never have in the past so I'll stick with that.
|
Very low on the priority list. Having said that, I love small venues and if I can stand at the stage during the show I will; occasionally the setlist can be seen which adds to the fun, but it's just a bonus.
|
Small venues tend to be more impromptu.
I hate arenas. Packed in like sardines. I did see ramstein at Westgate in Glendale. In the pit and have to say that no concert has ever come close to that show. |
I prefer when the setlist is basically every single song the band has ever done.
Doesn't happen very often. The Misfits, and the Sex Pistols come to mind... |
Best entertainment ever is tiny venues with performers no one has ever heard of - someone famous shows up. I had more fun in hotel bars on the nights they had amateur entertainment than at a concert where the players look like ants on the stage.
Bar hopping through Nashville on a Saturday afternoon is way better entertainment than going to the concerts. Kansas City had some pretty good back alley Blues venues that let amateurs and pros play on Saturday afternoon, too. |
Only play the songs I know.
|
Would rather be surprised.
|
I was at a dead concert years ago and happened to obtain a set list before the show. I would walk around screwing with people about what I thought they where going to play next.

I was also a sardine when they packed 160K folks inside the racetrack at Jazz Fest in 'Nawlins one time .... hooty hoot :)! Small venue memories that stand out.... Derek Trucks very first public "sit-in" at 9 on a week night over 30 years ago, Ben Folds Five first gig in a local college bar (I worked with Ben's mom), and Ivan and Ian Neville dropping in the same club for a set .... I bet I saw over 1K shows there ... 200 was a packed house. I miss those daze :)... |
I usually scout the internet for the bigger shows playlist. It is interesting to see the lists change as the show tours. If I am not familiar with a band then I will give the setlist a listen beforehand. I see a lot of shows with my teen daughter so I have to do some homework if I want to have a music discussion with my kid.

encore be damned!!! I ain't getting stuck in traffic. :)
|
surprise me for sure.
i LOVE it when some artist(s) belts out a cover-tune. at the moment, it always sounds fresher than the original. no exceptions. |

Keef and Mick's limo 'bout ran my azz over as we were looking up at the fireworks still going off :). Stadium and large venues generally suck, but sometimes ya gotta do.... Voodoo Lounge tour .... and they rocked ;) |

(now i'm that guy with earplugs - it hurts now) |
I like when they play some of their more obscure stuff mixed in with the hits.
I think the last time I was disappointed at a concert was Tom Petty at The Forum here in LA. TP didn't play "Breakdown", his breakthrough hit and he didn't invite Steve Winwood (opening act) to come out and join in the encore. Maybe they weren't getting along. |

Here's an example of one of Dave Alvin's setlists that was left on stage. No I don't own it..
American Music was the encore. It kicked ass. It went on and on and on and just kept building. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1626364500.jpg |
