A long time ago on a job that was far away I had to break up a slab of concrete. The boss pointed to a 25 lb sledge hammer and I thought "I can't swing that!". As if he was reading my mind he said "don't swing it, lift it and let it fall". That sucker was HEAVY!

Lift to a consistant point above the work bench, just guide the fall into the strike location. Even people with different muscle strengths can deliver the same consistant hit time after time, and make consistant part after consistant part. |
Also, know where to hit the concrete and fracture it so it comes out in big chunks. I did my parent's driveway when I was in high school with one of those thing. I was dumb and strong, then I discovered the elec jack hammer. SOB, I was in love with that thing.

The thick rubber neck guard is a good upgrade.

Between my first and second year at college...I worked for my small city public works.
Our first summer work was removing the city sidewalks and upgrading them. I was on a jack-hammer for half the summer. Let me tell you...a jack-hammer is murder on your hands. My knuckles still pay for it. |

When I worked on the main steam turbines of the US Navy nuclear ships now and then we had hammer just like that to bang on the special slugging wrenches we used to break the nuts that held the main steam throttle blocks down. The hammer handles were about half the length of that one and busting them loose was a dangerous job.
We were pulling the throttle valves of the main ship's service turbine generator and I had assigned an MM1 named Steve and two trainees to bust the nuts loose. Steve had one of the trainees stand on the slugging wrench on the nut and he tried to break it loose. Steve wasn't very strong and the other trainee said "let me have a whack at it" so Steve said okay wiseas*! The trainee jumped up on the ladder, took aim and let the hammer fly. Unfortunately he had swung it from over his shoulder, past his ear and bong.....it hit the wrench and flew right back and nailed him right in the middle of the forehead!!!!! He was out like a busted light bulb. He had to spend a couple days in the hospital and nobody wanted to have him work with them after that. John |
^^^ Ouch ... good thing that wrench smashing application hasn't been called upon so far on my part !
