What nice thing did someone do for you today?
I'm grateful for many things (a separate thread about what ails our culture, and I'll posit that a general lack of gratitude is up high on the list). I'm grateful to be an American, for my family, my faith, my abundance, and for the people of goodwill who serve us in various military services, law enforcement, emergency and health services. I'm grateful for many other things, including living in a relatively small town with a lot of nice people.
I think it helps us "exercise" our gratitude when we acknowledge that someone did something really nice for us. So here's mine for today: My wife and I were riding our bikes into town on the rural route from house. About 2 miles from town, my tire goes flat. We both have tire repair kits, but they are so old the glue is dry and useless in both. So my wife starts to ride into town to the nearest bike shop to get a new tire tube, while I start hiking in that direction carrying the bike and wheel. After 10 or 15 minutes of humping along, an old couple in their 80's swing by me, do a U-turn, and ask me if I want a ride into town. So we managed to just get my bike sort of in the trunk of their small car and they drive me in the direction of town. They are sweet as can be and tell me they've been married 60 years. As we get into town, we see my wife coming back the other direction with the new tube. So they drop me off, I thank them, and away they go. I try to assemble the new tube on the wheel, but now we realize the air canister we'd use to inflate it is dead. Seriously? I start walking toward the bike shop, again, which is now only about a quarter mile away (although carrying a mountain bike that distance is still not fun). Before I get 10 feet a woman in a pickup truck stops and offers me a ride. Perfect. I get to the bike shop and the woman working there won't even let me touch the wheel. She puts the tube and tire on, inflates it, and puts the wheel back on the bike for me, no charge. All good! Sorry for the long-winded, perhaps boring, story. But the generosity of all three parties made my day. So. Did someone do something nice for you today? |
My dad drove around to mechanics getting his Jeep Cherokee fixed up to give to my son.
My friend returned my call and offered to let me use her name in a proposal I'm going to make. |
I was told by a friend that I am her favorite male human ever.
Wow. How do I live up to this? |
Nice post and thread, Rob! I see good things happening around me every day. There are a lot of good people around.
I don't have anything to report today - that came in my direction - but I did quite a few things for others. I guess that still counts..... |
LJW. Just keep doing what you've been doing.

The Cardio Vascular Imagining Center induced stress instead of putting me on the treadmill.
They made needle go in so I didn't hardly feel it. They let me go home. Pretty good day if you ask me. |
My brother came over and we canned green beans together - 8 pints for him, 14 for us. Sounds kind of mundane, but that is something our families did when we were young. We have never done it as adults. It was fun to relive a part of our early lives. We talked about our grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins who would come over on canning day and pitch in and how much fun we had. My bother and I never talk at length about "feelings" kinds of things, but we touched on our thoughts about our parents and extended family. It was a wonderful time.
Then, UPS dropped off a nice and totally unexpected gift from a fellow Pelican. |
I accidentally bought one too many bottles of manual transmission fluid for the Civic. This was the last time I expect to do the deed on this car, so I went back to the dealer hoping the parts counter guy wouldn't be a stickler for the "all returns within 15 days" and "35% restocking fee" disclaimers plastered on the receipt. Plus, I needed a couple bottles of power steering fluid for Mrs. Noah's Odyssey. He just handed me the bottles and wouldn't charge me the difference, to avoid generating any paperwork.

Went to the grocery store and my bill was $3.10. Had a $20 and the cashier asked if I had a dime. Nope. She said she had one. Awesome!

Great thread.
My kid asked me if I wanted to shower first when I got back from a trip. ...and then checked with me before eating some leftovers for lunch in case I wanted them. :) |
My friend came over and found the issue with my hay baler that has plagued me for a week. He even stayed until midnight fixing it for me.

My neighbor Beth invites me to join in their family gatherings quite often. This past Saturday was a family BBQ and I ate very well.
|
My wallet fell out of my side pocket after getting some fuel for the 993. I didn’t realize it was gone for a couple of hours. In a panic I went back to the station and some good honest person had turned it in to the cashier. All items including three credit cards and cash were still there. I will definitely pay it forward!

I had to drop a duece really bad yesterday. I had a little more work to finish out the day after I left the cardiologist center. No dining rooms were open at McD's, Whataburger, or DQ, so I went to one of my customers shops. He had a sign on the restroom door "out of order", and I was about crap my pants at that point. I asked any other place around here?
He said that just the sink is broken, go ahead! Whew! |
my wife told me she loved me.
and she said i should go and buy a new tacoma!! |

I had 2 random long term customers, force themselves on me offering help pouring my concrete pad .
They both showed up with a pick up full of tools, a wheel barrow, and worked their butts off from 9 am to noon mucking , and general help till we had it all in the forms . They both said, they are coming for the next 2 pours, and Id better not dare offer them money or discounted work on their cars . Nice guys. Although , Im still gonna do them a solid whether they like it or not . |
This is a good thread by the way . Most of the stuff that we are all mad about daily, only lives on the internet . Most people in my little circle are decent normal humans.
Blow up your TV, ( or cell phone) go outside, live life , meet people, do good things ! |

The world is full of great people
The small percentage of aholes get way too much air time |
I did a good deed for someone yesterday ("pay it forward"):
Stopping at the local public library to return a DVD set my wife borrowed, I noticed a piece of paper in the parking lot. Originally I went over to the paper thinking I would clean up some litter, but as I got closer I saw that it was official-looking. It turned out to be car registration paperwork - an important item here in NJ. My original idea was to mail it to the owner, but I wasn't pressed for time so I delivered it in person. When I got to the owner's modest but well-kept residence, an elderly gentleman wearing a "Vietnam Veteran" cap answered the door. It turned out he was an Army vet (I mentioned to him I was Navy) and he was profoundly grateful for me delivering his "lost" paperwork. This good deed made me feel good, both for making the delivery and for helping a Vietnam vet. I am old enough to remember when vets of that war were treated like crap, and I very strongly believe to this day that vets of that era deserve every break they can get. |

I declined but thought it was a nice gesture on her part.....;) |
At my bank today - making a deposit. I ALWAYS throw some Atomic Fireballs into whatever I send them. Individually wrapped. I get a giant container of them from Amazon a couple times a year - and give them out to various folks I run into. Cheap thrills, huh?
So today in the return they sent me a whole bunch of muti-flavoured lollipops. Hard to understand her but I think she said something about it being lollipop day, whatever that means. Later this week I will drop salads off for my mechanic and his son. I always get them "chicken salad - salads" - which is a garden salad with a big scoop of chicken salad on top. The place I get them from always includes dressing and club crackers. I really enjoy doing little stuff like that. No telling what someone else may be going through. Small gestures might make a big impact.....you just never know..... |
Called my air conditioning guy a week ago.
Today he installed a ductless mini split in the 2 car garage. Installing it 6 days after my request in this heat was extra nice. |
Saturday, my son says he is going steelhead fishing in the early am. Then he said, but I would rather fish with you. I told him I was best from driving Saturday and wouldn’t be up super duper early. He said fine. We caught native cutthroat Sunday in a gorgeous remote stream. Awesome!

BTW....I called a guy I know to do some palm trimming at one of the properties I maintain. Not only did I never get a return call.....I had to contact his step-mom just to make sure he was still alive, because his mailbox was full and he wasn't answering his phone. Next day, I was on my way to another property and saw him and his helper trimming palms at another property so backed my truck up, drove up, and tried to find out what the deal was. Long story short, his step mom ultimately had to coordinate getting the work scheduled because this guy was too busy to call anyone during the day. He stays busy so is getting plenty of work but there's no excuse for not returning calls - I don't care who you are. Congrats again on your new garage system! |

Be nice to detail the car in comfort on a hot muggy day. It's a 1 ton rated for 500sf and the 2 car garage is 400sf. May have to add some insulation to the attic and to the thin insulated metal garage door. Couple of backyard outlet wires to reconnect today. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1626877807.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1626877824.jpg |

You garage isn't as cluttered as mine is right now...lol. But I hear ya. I have had outside cats for 15 years. Started out as a litter of 4 in my side yard. Over the years one by one they have "disappeared". My last one has been missing now since Sunday night. Their water and food has always been in the garage with the door ajar - which is why I never did any climate control. If he doesn't return :(, I will no longer need to leave the garage door ajar and can move forward. Probably a window unit with heat for starters. But I'd rather have my kitty back. he was a good dude. I did coat the flat roof with white silicon and that has really helped! =========== Back to the thread topic.....another Cattledog owner in South Carolina had surgery done for her boy. Her daughter did a bunch of neat artwork to raise funds for the surgery. Everyone bought something. Mine came to $26 and I sent $50 to help out. Today I will bring lunches to my mechanic. We're all in this together....... |

I used my lunch break to return a product to Home Depot for someone who bought the wrong thing... |
Out dog walking this morning there was an elderly lady I slightly know, she's about 87. She'd lost her car keys along the beach trail somewhere. We looked and looked and couldn't find them so I drove her home to collect her spare set. When we got back to her car there was a note on it from someone else to say "I've found your car keys" and a phone number. She's so lovely and it was great that there was a good outcome to it all.
