I've had a shell on my F150 since right after I got the truck. Putting a shell on it was part of my grand plan, and I also bought a used, non-color-matched one, because I am frugal. I put roof bars on it for carrying SUPs and kayaks. I added a Decked drawer system (maybe not so frugal, after all?) which greatly helps with keeping from having to climb in to get stuff that has slid to the front. I kind of wish my side windows were awning windows, which would provide even better access to other areas of the bed.
I also made an awning that attaches with "Keder welt," so I can easily put it on when I want it, but it isn't hanging off the roof of my truck the 99% I don't need it.

My wife's Tacoma has no shell/tonneau, and it is nice to have both options (shell or open bed). Honestly, I wish her truck had a cover of some kind way more than I wish mine didn't have one.

That’s a cool setup, doublestuff! May have to copy you. The kayak carrier and drawers.

I'm disappointed with George (The Architect)... I thought he would have chimed in with a DIY solution by now. ;)
