As to that guy's use of, "per se,"
"I don't think that word means what you think it does..." Bro. :D |

The guy probably thought he was in Drive when he was still in Reverse and pushed on the loud pedal. Hope his insurance was paid up! |
The very first thing i do after backing down a boat ramp. is toss in wheel chocks the second I get out of the truck.
. |
^^^ would be better to toss it into Park
|
I owned more than few boats....I learned that they needed a test to back a trailer...I had one bent trailer.....
|
I solo launch my boat (17 foot whaler) on a ramp like that in Puget Sound probably 2-3 times per week at this time of year (e.g. I did it on Friday and Sunday and I'll do it again tomorrow), this sure looks like operator error vs especially steep or slippery ramp or whatever.
Note that the driver's door is open, but none of the three people appear to be wet... that says to me they were out of the truck before it went into the water, no wet exit. Possible the back of the truck floated as ckelly already mentioned (this can also happen if you don't unstrap your boat, but that doesn't seem to be the case here), the parking brake would not be holding the front wheels if they are the only ones making contact. |

That was a small bass boat .... I've launched solo more times than I have brain cells left.... and still have more than "that guy" :D. |

Maybe better to throw it in drive so it pulls out of the way while you're dealing with the boat. |

Operating a PU truck and trailer is a manly art that some just don't have in them. Here is a favorite:

biggest unintended launch I saw was a crane/truck
big semi sized truck extra long reach boom tryed to pull pilings on the boat ramp at low tide pile stayed truck launched took 3 full semi sized tow trucks to get him out funny to see 3 semi trucks doing wheelies to inch the crane out |
unfortunately insurance covers stupidity

40 plus years of boat launching never had an issue. 90% of those done solo. My current boat gets towed twice a year. When I drop it in in the spring, and when I haul it out in the winter. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1628081269.jpg |
^^^^ I hear ya Vinny .... it's just something that I've never seen .... mostly because I'm a bass boat man ;). That's a LOT of boat by comparison... and four decades has taught many of us what NOT to do.... hopefully by observation...
I have NEVER forgotten to put the plug in ... and still laugh like Mr. Ed when I think back about that time :D |

Funny drain plug story. A bunch of years, back, we had an incident eith a vehicle in a lake late at nigh. Back then, there was always a battle between the first aid squad and the fire depts to run a scene. At this one, the squad pretty much ran us off the road to get their boat in the water before we could. They were about 75 yrds out heading to tje other side of the lake where the car was, when we hear them screamibg and waving thier arms. They were sinking. No drain plug. Needless to say, we had to go out with our boat to get them. The feud pretty much ended after that. :D . |
