Selling locally - CL, FB Marketplace, Offer Up, - what works the best and why?
I would like to start thinning some stuff out here and these items are too large to ship.
I know I can still list them on eBay with "local pickup only" provision. But wonder what some of those here are using - and what works best for them. Primarily, I would like to sell some of the plants I have, still in their containers, left over from my landscaping business. But at some point it will be other things. Thanks for any input! So far FB marketplace is outperforming CL for me. I haven't tried the others.

I like FB Marketplace as well and if it's a more valuable item or something you want more eyes on you can spend a few bucks to make it a sponsored ad.

How does it work on FB MP? I'll go find a YT video that will explain but wouldn't mind some personal comments also. Thanks, guys!

Have sold a couple of things via FBM but mostly I use Kijiji in Canada.

I like to leave it at the end of the driveway. Some nuts are always looking for stuff! HAHA!
Just kidding, Baz! |
Market place is working for me as well. Also for buying. CL seems to have run it's course but you can find some stuff from time to time. I won't sell on CL because of fees. Can't get the swing of Offer up which seems to pull from various selling platforms?
Get a larger targeted buyer by joining various selling groups. Yard sale groups, swip swap, etc. |
I have emptied my garage recently with Craig’slist.
Have a motorcycle on FB now. Got a response in an hour. Interested in my science experiment. |
FB marketplace and OfferUp are about the only ones I use anymore.

(Isn't there an instant market for plants in Florida? Seems like gardening is as popular as sin down in your part of the world...) |
One other thing I do, especially for thing of value on FB Marketplace is search for groups who have an interest around what I am selling, once you are granted membership you can actually target your Marketplace ads to show in groups of which you are a member.

We sold a bunch of crap when moving away from DC last fall. All on FB marketplace. Seems to get tons more views and your stuff isn't lost in a sea of stuff on CL.
Plus CL seems to be the new eBay, at least on cars/trucks. I always look but the dealers of all sizes have taken to CL. I set the filter to show lowest price first. Some A Hole dealer always has a vehicle at $5 or something low. Then you click on it and find out the car is $9,995 |

It's been 2 years and 1 month since I did my last landscape job - consisting of design and install of irrigation, landscaping, and low voltage lighting. Since then I am doing just upkeep on a hand full of properties, which are owned by former landscape clients. Which leaves me with a surplus of some material I already had on hand plus a few I accumulated. But your comment about plants being a hot commodity here is spot on. I just took a quick look at FB MP in this area and there's a number of plants similar to what I have but nothing as nice as my stuff and they've listed them at more than I would for mine, so looks like this is where I should go. I'll spend the rest of the week taking photos and getting a list of what I have and then maybe list them next week. I really appreciate everyone's comments and input. I'll update down the line once I get a few sales under my belt! SmileWavy |

Around my area CL is practically dead...very few new adds, and alot of commercial adds. I almost exclusively use FB marketplace for buying, and selling.
on Marketplace, you better be prepared to answer texts, and sometimes phone calls for a hot item you are selling. If you are buying, you better be prepared to jump in the truck with cash in hand to get to the seller first. High interest items often sell in minutes, or hours. |

Cannot remember how many free ads you can post but I think you can have up to 10 photos on your ad. When I bought my new to me truck near the end of June (from a Kijiji ad) I had sold my old truck (in 4 days) and my Toyota commuter car (in two days). There are tons of people from south of the 49th that are snatching up vehicles and taking them for resale in the states. |
