A suspension for this?

Crazy..he apologized on air, and still suspended.

I initially saw the video with no sound. One of the announcers said "now what do you do with < some guy's name >?" I didn't pick up the name. It's foreign.

Then the other announcer said "be very, very careful," but he said it in an accent, that I assume was supposed to be the accent of < some guy's name >. It didn't seem offensive to me. But I can see how some folks might find it offensive.

Japanese player. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shohei_Ohtani

Racially insensitive. And extremely juvenile. That's the world we live in...

Ah, I don't follow sports, and didn't catch the name. It may be something that occurs between buddies at home or in a bar, and is probably not intended to be malicious, but when you're broadcasting to TV and/or radio or the Internet, it's a much bigger deal. And yes, it's insensitive no matter when/where it happens.

Where this logic leads would be the end of the theater industry as no one could write or say a character different than themself.

It'd be a boring world.

Glad I'm not on TV.
Furthermore the way TV is censoring itself into corporatblandspeak I rarely give it attention.

If you're that unprofessional on the air, you can't be too surprised to lose your job for it.

If a non-white announcer were to say, when speaking of a German athlete, "I sink he shute be vetty, vetty kehful", it's unlikely anyone would think (or sink, if you will) anything about it.

Nor should they ...

Acting whether on stage, TV or movies, playing roles, or performing comedy/stand-up is different from sports announcing. I'd expect a sports announcer to be like the news (should be). You read or comment on facts. You can probably even give an opinion as long as it's obvious that it's your opinion (he's playing great this year, but it seems like he's been slipping the past couple of games). There's a time and place for most things or a time and place to NOT do certain things.

Can you imagine if you had to go to court for some reason and your judge or the other lawyer or a bailiff was foreign and you started mocking their nationality/ethnicity? Clearly, that'd be idiotic. The repercussions would likely be unfavorable. It probably wouldn't be the same as acting a fool as a sports announcer, but would it be any less foolish?

How about if a black guy was at bat and the guy started talking in ebonics or like the old step-and-fetch-it character from old black and white movies? Would that be acceptable?

And my comment is why assume the worst possible.
A horrible way to go through life that is.
Leaves a frown on the face.
And that frown will reflect back to oneself from others.

Some of the warmth with which one receives the actions of others returns to you.
What concerns me most in this day and age is how quick people are to assign the worst negative.

And lets say in court I was asked to quote someone.
Would not expressing how they said it be an important part?
There are words and phrases that without doing this will carry a different meaning.
And why are only some manners of speaking taboo but not others?

There were 3 options for the network: do nothing; suspension; fire him.

The announcer clearly did something wrong. He was trying to be cute (and what he was saying was respectful of the skill of one of the best players in baseball). But he also did something insensitive and racially offensive. Yeah, it was offensive. The network can't do nothing, here in 2021. You can't do sophomoric stuff like this to anyone on a national/international stage, especially to this season's MVP favorite. But if firing seems to be too over-the-top as well, then suspension it is.

MLB caters to a wide audience that they are trying to grow around the world. Mocking an Asian player's accent is not good business. Period.

If you operated a store, would you let your staff mock the accent of your customers? Is that difficult to understand?

^^^ I don't think there was any 'mocking' done. He just was trying to imitate his talking.
I'd like to hear what Ohtani thought of it....

And there's the problem. You don't think he was mocking.

Of several million viewers some will be insulted, fairly, or not.

So MLB can't allow it.

And if he wasn't mocking, what exactly was he doing? Entertaining us?

I understand that I've been making the other argument. I tend to be no-nonsense. I mostly say what I think. I'm also not bothered or offended by jokes that target just about anything (because I understand that they are jokes). Some of my buddies send me or tell me jokes that would make a lot of folks cringe or be offended. I'll laugh if I find them funny. I mostly don't give a sheisse about PC or cancel culture.

That said, I do try to refrain from offending people. There are jokes that I think are funny, but I would not necessarily tell those jokes to someone that somehow fit as the target of the joke unless I knew them REALLY well and knew that they wouldn't be offended.

PC and cancel culture can effe right off. At the same time, be courteous and do unto others...

And if you are the face/representative of a company or entity, and you want to remain in that position, don't put yourself in the position for the company to have to worry about "is he making us look bad or should that have been fine?"

I would not wear a shirt with my company logo and stand in front of a location or make a video for youtube while spouting off a bunch of inflammatory speech or displaying inflammatory images and NOT expect that to potentially have a severe impact to my job.

There is "how things should be" and "how things are" and to live in the world, you have to understand both and find your personal balance. Some folks will stand by their principals and say "I'm going to do X, Y, and Z because that's how it should be! The folks that don't think so can go to hell." And they have a point, but they also have to understand and be prepared to live with their actions.

this doesn't get less entertaining or any less true any time I watch it.
