Middle age apprentice executive...
I'm 43, been doing back breaking manual labor and was thinking of a career change. I'm thinkin' a corner office, nice a/c and posting on Pelican, while getting paid way more than I'm worth might be a hoot.
What say ye :D? |
You should contact that middle aged apprentice mason who started a thread here to exchange experiences.

I'll ask the kid who works for me. He's graduating from Machinist school this month. Went to an interview at a place that wanted to pay him $28/hr to start plus a 3rd shift bonus because the job required working the 3rd shift. He turned it down. Didn't want to work 3rd shift.
First job right out of school you take what you can get - doesn't everyone know that? I told him if he wanted to walk in as a Vice President he'd need to take a few more classes.:rolleyes: |

My own son left a job, had an in hand offer, but turned it down cause he didnt want to commute. Ended up living on savings for nine months but landed something closer to what he wanted. Had a nice 9 month vacation and only loss is having to replace some savings. I wouldn't have had the balls, but it worked out ok for him. |

I thought that was your job? :D |
My son works in IT Security. He's finally landed at a company that he likes and treats him well. For now.
Kids these days (especially tech) change employers like we change socks. The days of being a "30 year company man" are passing. It's no longer a stigma to have had 3 different employers in a 5 year period. |
Goal: Getting paid for what you know, instead of what you actually do.
Step 1# you gotta do something long enough to know everything to do. Now call yourself a consultant and get incorporated. Step 2# find a place that doesn't know what to do. Step 3# then tell them what to do and charge a bunch of $$$. P.S. then you can write stuff on PARF all day and get paid too |

I worked in a corner office, one floor above my friend. When a particularly good one strolled past outside I'd dial his number and say "code 10" and put the phone down. |
